ATF only, definitely do not put gear oil in it

I just changed mine today with plain old $2.50 a quart cheapo ATF which is what most builders recommend, replacing the synchromesh I've been running to see what happens

Use non-synthetic ATF. The earlier year T56 from '98-'00 have paper blocker rings and synthetics will damage them. '01+ switched to carbon, and the damage is not an issue however I've heard of grinding issues due to the different friction properties of the synthetic.

Like I said, I'd stick with conventional ATF. Synthetic really doesn't buy you much in a manual trans as it isn't subject to the heat and abuse of engine oil, so the fluid lubricating properties don't break down.

that business about not using synthetic is a myth...
I've been using synthetic in my 2000 for about the last 6 years, shifts just as well as it ever did. Most of that time using Royal Purple Syncromax, seems to work slightly better than the others I tried.

some builders down in Australia recommend to use Castrol Tranzmax Z and seen few people use it down here for Manual transmission. I always thought it was supposed to be for Auto trans!
