Default Who do you guys have weld a sump on your tanks?

I currently have a 16 gal fuel cell with an A1000 pump. I would prefer to go back to a stock tank/filler neck to make fillups easier, especially since here in NJ the gas station attendants don't seem to like people pumping their own gas

I thought about going with a new EFI tank from a 4.3 Monte, getting a RobbMC fuel pickup for my vent, return and suction and mount the A1000 below the tank. Concern is obviously starving the pump on startup/cornering since I would much rather have the pump pulling fuel from a sump.

If I end up getting a new tank and say the CE sump, who do you guys bring your tanks to have the work done? I would do it myself, but just started learning how to TIG, confidence level is not high enough.

I thought about just selling the A1000 because it is pretty new and going with an in tank pump, but I already have my -10 feed/return lines in the car (previously had a 400SBC with carb) and pump all wired up so figured it would be easier sticking with what I have.

Thanks guys.

Have the tank boiled out at a radiator shop for a day or two. Then take it to your local fab guy and he'll probably purge it with argon, helium, etc.

Thanks. I plan on going with a new tank, so ridding it of old fumes/gas won't be an issue. Have to find somewhere here in central NJ that would do the fab work.

do the initial cut/tack/weld yourself, then take it to a radiator shop to brass fill and solder it.

If it's a new tank it's easy, should be able to take it to any welding or fabrication shop. I've done quite a few at my shop, unfortunately mostly used tanks... Being a new one it's cake.

Thanks guys. Doing the inital work and having someone wrap it up will be my route. I assume Eastwood or someone similar sells something that will seal the inside from rust.

I found some guy on craigslist to do mine for $100. Looks awesome. I wish I could figure out how to hook up my sending unit though. I'm just in limbo until something comes along.

Stick the original sender back in there minus pump and plug the old feed line

My original sender doesn't fit. I justdropped the rear to try that but it's too big. It's too long to go down all the way and the diameter of the top is too large. If I'm missing something let me know because I can't make it work.

Cut the bottom off until it does fit. All you want to retain is the float and return line

Do Not cut the bottom out. The module bucket is spring loaded and will compress down.
Retain the original sender, mount the module in another location. The hole in the tank need to be larger.
2X what Pocket said The fuel level sender in the module is not compatible with your existing gauge.

This link has some excellent photos showing the installation of the module in a tank.

Here's what I did.

I took the fuel level SENSOR (the arm thing that goes up and down) off of my '99 sending unit. Take the purple wires out of the plug that goes to the sending unit. Then did the same thing to the '98 sending unit. Then mount the '99 level sensor on the '98 sending unit and run the purple wires to the plug on that unit. No cutting, modifying or buying new parts for the tank. So basically use the 98 sending unit, in the 98 tank, with the 99 level sensor. I plugged it, turned the car on, and it responds to the arm moving.
