I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not whether it's a M6 or A4 but mine runs right @750 rpm's when it's warmed up in neutral. There could be alot of things causing the idle to be higher than normal. Do you have a check engine light? I had a similar problem like that before with my 94 z28 A4 & it turned out the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) was bad. It had these symptoms for awhile before it finally threw a code, Fred

ahh younguns.

If you don't have a stethoscope, take a BIG flathead, put the flathead near the suspected area of sound and put your ear against the handle. Indeed it works.

Good way to see if its an accesory, valvetrain, block noise, etc.

i had a similar problem with myc ar when i got it from the dealer, idled around 1000 rpms, M6 too. I took it to them told them wtf is wrongfix it, as i still was under warrenty, luckily they didnt see the nitrous bottle and 4 an lines sitting in the rear seat however, considerin the car was traded in by a woman that owned it taht was from colorado they gave me some bullshit that the dealership must have tuned the pcm to run a little bit lean...i told them i dont need their expert opinion cause most likely they have no idea what they were saying anyways. so i had them turn it down to around 850-880...and to tell you the truth, i kinda liked it better higher lol, got into the rpm range quicker lol
