Default Thermostat?

Just recieved my new 160 degree thermostat today. Ready for installation. Now uh, where to start? Never had to mess with one before, is there anything I need to know for before, during, and after installation? Starting with, where the heck is this thing at on the LS1? LOL

A thermostat with a temperature that low will cause all sorts of problems. Excessive engine wear is one. An engine needs to run at a pretty much constant temperature. When you put a thermostat that low in, the cooling system may not be able to satisfy it all the the time and the temp will still be just as high as before. Then with less heat load the temperature will be all the way back down to 160. Also, any centrifugal pump (like your water pump) draws more power as the flow increases. A lower temp thermostat will require more power. If your engine heats up with the stock rated thermostat, you have other problems.

So, if i'm understanding correctly, you are saying the 160 thermostat is going to cause a loss of horsepower. I realize that the LS1, from the factory is installed with a 200 plus degree thermostat and that the guages on our dash are not the most accurate. I've always thought that heat kills. If you get your fans to turn on at a lower temp this should keep the engine at a lower operating temp which in turn should result in better eta's.

A 160* stat will not hurt anything. Install it and don't look back

Good engine heat and cold intake air is best for performance. FI engines need to run at least 195*.

not to cut down your plans or anything but noticed in your sig that u planned on getting the slp performance pack the 400hp one.....dont bother man for the insane money they want for that bs you can get more than 400hp out of your car through a nice cam and average headers, no bs. tried true and proven. that performance pack will get you no wher close to 400 and you will be regretting it. trust me, every ls1 is different and responds to the same mods differently. you can get a full cam kit for around a 1000 including an aggresive or mild cam with retainers, seats, lifters and springs then a set of headers for pacesetter for 200. this will give you a better increase in power than the overpriced power pack that will net you maybe 350 total horse. trust me i have friends who fell for slp's money trick
