changeing a cam with tyebar lifters ?
we are going to do a cam change in an lsx 454 that has tie bar lifters
the question is can we do the cam swap the same way as a stock lifter setup
leaving the heads on and putting dowels up in the block to hold the lifters in place
we don't need to change the springs just the cam
i haven't done one with tie bar lifters before
have done them with the stock lifters in the plastic bucket
using the dowels
thanks

If it has the LSX block you can keep the lifter up by removing the valley cover and picking them up by hand where the block is open for additional head bolts. On some square port heads you can actually get the lifters out with the head on.

ok
thanks for that it is an LSX block with LS7 heads
will they drop down enough when you pull the cam out to stop you getting the new one back in ?
will the dowel idea work with them or not ?
would be good not to have to take the inlet manifold of

Supposing you hold them in place with the valley cover removed, you can adjust them to any height needed. There's no reason the dowels shouldn't work either. It's up to you. The cool thing with Link-Bar lifters is there is no way they can fall out and into the pan as mentioned above.

You're going to need to pull the intake manifold and valley cover. Dowels may or may not hold them up depending on the side profile of the lifter, I've never tried it with link bars

Oh and yes they will drop far enough down to stop you on the installation of the cam. I think that using two good flexible magnets, just small enough to get through the pushrod holes and down to the lifters to adjust them would suffice, that is if you can't get the dowels in place.
