Default Magnaflow vs borla

Hey guys...this may be an annoying thread to some but i tried the search and couldnt exactly find what i need.

i have a magnaflow catback with headers and ORY and i like it but the quietness is getting kinda old. I want something a bit louder but not obnoxiously loud. I was thinking borla cuz of the different plates and the videos online sounded good.

What are your thoughts?

My Borla catback sounds great, and you can hear it, especially when it gets up there, but it isn't obnoxiously loud.

You have the same setup as me down to the Volant CAI. I like the sound, classy without been obnoxious. When I want loud I open my cutout. You should consider one. Loud gets old too.

+1 on the cutout. I have the magnaflow quad tip with a DMH e-cutout and the difference in sound between open/closed is night and day. I have a catted y, so I imagine it would be even louder on an ORY. Just know it doesnt exactly sound good with the cutout open.. its just... well... loud.

yeah man, i got a magnaflow with a cat welded in, but the dampened sound does get old, a electric cutout/manual cutout would best suit the sound issue. You can get two before it merges into the y, or get one before the muffler. Its about 150 bucks for an ctp i think + 30 bucks for a turndown pipe, or i think around 30-50 for a manual cutout.

Borla's are nice tho, they have a distinct sound, and great build quality, but the catbacks run 800+ bucks or something silly like that. I say get the cutout, and with the money you saved get some gears

Well there are TWO Borla catbacks -- the adjustable (recommend) and non-adjustable...

I recommend the adjustable since the cutout is BUILT-IN -- you can choose which plate you want and change it at will, or better yet install a DMH E-Cutout and control it at will from your driver seat. Volume control is a great feature.

The magnaflow has no adjustable option...

Shop around, I paid way under $800 for my Borla adjustable catback...

thanks for the input guys. i think im going to go with the cutout. that way i get the best of both worlds. with having an ORY, will my car sound like absolute crap? like an old farm truck or should i see about maybe some high flow cats?

I would get the cutout after the y pipe and see how you like it. The sound is a love hate thing and if you don't like it you can always add cats latter on.

Be carefull with a Borla and ORY. Its gonna be really loud and a little bit raspy.

If you don't like rasp like me, high-flow cats are a necessity.

I have a non adjustable borla with tsp ory and its not raspy like the adjustable borla. When I was getting my car tuned by Don at Slowhawk performance in MA he asked me what it was because it didnt sound as raspy as the usual catback ory setups.
For the record iv had the magnaflow on my old 98z with highflow cats then switched to ory and sound wasnt any different. It was just as raspy.
IMO I dont mind a little rasp and I hate cats thats my taste. I can also say IMO that I love my borla over the magnaflow without a doubt.

i love my magnaflow, and i know theres a thread around here with a whole list of hp and tq numbers, i think it was a guy building a td 3" system with warlock mufflers, but magnaflow was in the top three for hp and tq, no other brand was in BOTH of the top three... its quiet at idle, (not too quiet with longtubes and ory) but loud enough at WOT.

always thought borla was overprices ****.

I just ditched my magnaflow for TSP Duals with bullets..Its the perfect sound man. I have not regretted it once.

But between the 2, get the borla. Borla sounds good also. I wasnt happy with my magnaflow for the same reason. Too quiet!

I have cam, headers, ory and the adjustable borla and i love it, its tame when im just poking along but when i nail it it f$!@ing screams and yes it has some rasp(open plate in rear)but i LOVE the rasp a LS motor makes as opposed to a older small block style of rasp.Everywhere i go guys old and young tell me how good the car sounds and never once have i had a person say man that sounds raspy especially when i busting it wide open. The only guy who doesnt like the sound of my car is my IMPORT friend that hates it when i whip his turbo 240.....
