would like your thoughts and opinions on my 402 build
alright guys, i have recently removed my 347 and purchased a 402 shortblock for my car. since i've made this purchase, i'm kind of on a tight bugdet for the top end. i still have my whole top end from my 347 that i can use for now until i save up some more cash to upgrade. so as i see it, i only have a couple choices.
1. use my current top end (consists of cnc'd tf 215's, custom comp 238/242, and ported fast 92/92), run it for a while, have $0 in it, and upgrade later.
2. switch to a ls3/l92 top end, possibly use my same cam, and still be out little to no money (after selling my tf's).
any thoughts, opinions, or other options will be greatly appreciated as i am open to anything right now. just want to keep it rather cheap for now.
and in case any of you were wondering, it's not a daily driver, so my goal is to make as much power as possible.

I am doing pretty much the same build what are you looking to spend on heads ? I have west coast stage 3 l92s but I am running a pro systems carb with mast intake but anything west coast has will make gobs of power but if that's too much I would look into the l92s Texas speed has they flow pretty good and are affordable if you wanna stay trick flow and make power I out get their 235s they flow really well just depends on how much cash you have to play with I guess good luck on the build

It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers you get out of your 402 build. Who's shortblock did you purchase? Your current top end is similar to mine. See my mods in my sig and a more detailed list in my album.

well thats just the thing. i'm not looking to spend very much at all right now (maybe a couple hundred bux or so). if anything, i was hoping to get enough for my tf's to buy me a good set of ls3/l92s and make more power but i dont know what kind of money i would be out with the supporting mods, like intake, fuel rails, etc. i was hoping someone could shed some light on a decent budget build that might make upper 400's. OR, like i said, i could just stay with what i have (good quality parts) for a while and be in the mid 400's

wow, those are some nice numbers. i bought the shortblock from a friend for fairly cheap who acquired it through another deal. it was in a boosted vette and had dished pistons in it. im swapping them out for some flat tops. so see, this was a last minute purchase that i couldn't pass up which are why my funds are limited. on a side note though, i would be thrilled to get those numbers out of my set up, but you do have a 6spd too.

0.100.....59.6......68.3
0.200....121.9....139.8
0.300....186.7....218.5
0.400....231.4....270.9
0.500....254.2....304.3
0.550....260.2....314.8
0.600....266.1....321.8
... these numbers are pretty close to stock LS3's, but I have heard the longer runners in the LS3's will hurt torque. I LOVE the 497 rwt I have right now.

Not sure what tranny Brian is running but I don't see any problem hitting high 400s I wouldn't be surprised if you hit the 500 mark going to pull like a freight train too

cool, thanks for the great info and input guys. i may just go ahead and bolt my setup up and see how it goes. sounds like it will be pretty satisfying. then i'll just ****** me up a set of 235's later on.

Keep us informed .... I would be surprised if your not up in the high 400's. I would also be interested to see the difference between the 215's and 235's in a 402. If you don't re-post in this thread, drop me a pm with a link to your new thread.

I should have thought about posting this earlier. These are the dyno runs before and after the 402 shortblock swap. The only change was the shortblock. MUCH more usable power under the graph!

My 402 ran awesome with stage 1 LS6 PRC heads, a 237/242 cam (MS3), unported 92/92 and 1 3/4 Pacesetters. Made 496/482 after some tweaking and good tuning. Many consider this mild in a 402 but I pretty much kept up with everyone else I ever met with a 402 camaro.
I recently upgraded my cam to a 247/251 (sTRoker V.3), Got my intake ported and added TSP 1 7/8's headers. I picked up 30 RWHP Peak and around 50 RWHP at redline. I can def tell my motor would love some better heads as you can see when it falls off in the dyno sheet, but it runs very well for what its got IMO. I just wish I had a good race track around here. I think I'm gonna keep my car this way until I have to do another build as I would love a solid 418 or 427 600+ RWHP car.
I'm sure your TFS's would do better than my Stage 1 LS6's. They flowed a best of 307.8 @ .600 but fell off above that.
