Default To 4.10 or not To 4.10

Hey guys, I have an 02' SS. for starters it is bone stock except for a strut tower brace. (T-top car) and muffler delete. Car pulls 326rwhp and 331rwhp with air box lid popped open (dyno pulls prior to removing the muff). I am thinking about changing the rear gear ratio to 4.10's. I believe stock camaros come with 3.24's and SS's like mine come with 3.42's. The car has 6-speed manual in it. Wondering if anyone that has done this switch could chime in and let me know just how streetable the 4.10's are? With the 6-speed I'm not too worried about around town, but I do like to take my car on long trips. It know it will run much higher in the rpm range, just not interested in running down the highway at 80mph pulling 4k rpm. Thanks

Yes.80mph you wont be anywhere near 4k, 6th gear is awesome in these cars.

410s and traction and be ready for a new rear in The near future.

do it, just make sure you dont have sticky tires. on 18's i run 2k @72 down the highway in top gear. if you do get them dont be surprised if the gears are super loud compared to stock.

I'm at 1800rpm's at 70mph with stock size tires. But,in a stock rearend they are weak. don't try and hook real hard. If you like to highway race,go 3.73. the 4.10 will only let you get to about 120mph then you will have to hit 5th. I also had 3.73 and it was an improvement over the stock 3.42.

Do it. Then you'll know what gear whine and the terror of 1st gear axle-eating launches are like (with sticky tires, at least; anything else will just result in a lot of tire-related smoke).

4.10s/4.11s kick *** with a 6-speed, but if I did it again, I'd put the money towards a 4.11-geared 9", rather than spending it on the 10-bolt.

Go for it. If I had the knowledge or a reputable shop to do it I would've already had it done. I might would go 3.90's though. Just because I sometimes go on long trips on the i-state. I am sure the 4.10s are the ****. I know mustang guys are big fans of swapping gear ratios. Night and day difference supposedly.

You're in the minority - especially given your mods - with a quiet 10-bolt.

Doesn't matter how well they're set up, hard launches on the 10-bolt (and even the 12-bolt) causes housing distortion that changes the gear pattern, meaning the best guy in the US can set the gears up to be dead quiet, and a couple launches later, you've got a banshee in the axle.

With a quality gear/bearing/seal kit and proper install, you should have little to no whine. The trade off is worth a little whine IMO...and you don't have to do hard 1st gear launches. Obviously beating on your car things will break faster. Treat it good and things will last.

I've been really wanting to do this myself. I've heard that the LS1/M6/4.10 combo is just nasty. What is a gear swap running nowadays, labor wise?

4.10 are a bit to much. Get a set of 3.90's. I've had both and like the 3.90's much better and the car is faster with them. I would do 3.73's before 4.10's. The 4.10's are weak, hard to set up and will spin more on the street.

There is so much dog **** in your statement. 4.10's are too much for a m6? Maybe if you wear a skirt. The differnce between the two is so small. You can spin just as much with 3.90's. Depends on your suspension set up and tire's as well. Too many factors come in with this...not just the gear ratio. And your car being faster...lol Again, too many variables in this one as well.

Bruce, will we EVER get the "Buffer 360?" LOL

Well how bout this, (Sorry to the OP for the hijack; Maybe it will help us both)

For a 99% street car, that has to see 2 hr trips on a 75mph interstate, what's better for a VRX4 cam, with supporting mods? 3.90's? Would 3.73's kill the power band??

I like my 3.42's in 6th gear. 1600RPM @ 70ish is nice.

What will 3.90's be at 70? 4.11's?

Your car will be fine on long trips with the 4.10s. The 6th gear will still be revving quite low, I'm sure you would be surprised. You need to go for a ride in a 4.10 geared car, it is really the only way to find out your own preference & not listen to hearsay from those that haven't got them but somehow think they know all the facts.
