I am here to learn more about the LS? and what my options are for swapping my 5.3 out for a 6.0 in my Avalanche.

If anyone has done it or has information I can use, let me know.

Welcome!

Honestly man the difference between a stock 5.3 and a stock 6.0 in your avalanche won't be a huge difference you can feel. Makes for a cool conversation piece or bragging rights.

This is coming from a guy who swapped a Ls1 with a Lq4 6.0 also.

If you are dead set with it though, you should find a junkyard LQ9 or Lq4 lower rotating assembly (meaning assembled bottom end, that only needs heads and accessories) for the most economical route. A crate motor works also! Reuse everything from your stock 5.3 on the new motor.

If I can get about 400 hp, 400tq that would be ok. I don't need a race truck, just something that has more pep than what I have now. This is my everyday vehicle and these things aren't exactly gas friendly. I am in the military, so, I don't drive more than about 4,000 miles a year. The most I have driven at one time was roughly 2,000 miles. I have a small lift on it with 295 70 17's. Just a small amount of modest power is what I am looking for, any ideas?

Cool deal on being in the Military, thanks for serving. I did 5 years myself so I understand that you won't be doing a ton of driving.

You would get more of a response if you posted up on http://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/

Where you stationed at now? What branch?

In my opinion you should keep the 5.3 and go with a Procharger or STS rear mount turbo. both you can install yourself and so long as you keep the boost in check your gas and power should improve. WAY more so than a time consuming engine swap.

Kris,
Going the route of a power adder had crossed my mind. But if you look at the cost of a unit, programming, and programming again, it makes more sense to go with a "all motor" set up rather than a something extra. Trust me, I know the cool factor of having a charger, turbo or spray is hard to match, but I need to keep this one as simple and reliable as possible. I don't have the time or place to do the work if something comes up.
I am active Army, pcs'ing to Stewart in a week. You?

I've had my share of power in the past....... This is just one a a few that I built for myself over the years. This was pump gas, everyday driver. Lots of fun! (click on picture)

Welcome! I love the Avalanche; it was my second choice after the Camaro, as I'm used to driving pickup trucks and working on them. However, I've caught some hell for a pickup not being "appropriate for a lady" as my father so delicately puts it. I have a buddy who dropped the 6.0 in his '05 'Lanche and it actually was less trouble than he thought it'd be and he's glad he made the swap. Now if he could just keep his foot out of it... Got pics of your ride? Would love to see.
