Default Need help with a4 tranny

Car is a 98 t/a. All engine and suspension mods, tranny is stock A4. I'm the first to admit I don't know a ton about cars, and even less about automatic transmissions. Car has 139k on the clock. Tranny flushed and changed less than 10k miles ago. I was coming around a corner at a good pace (as usual) and suddenly the tranny would not shift out of first. RPM's shot up and with a small clunk shifted. Stopped and started again and the tranny would not shift out of first, even manually. Eventually the RPM's would float down and car would seem to operate as normal. Checked the fluid and it's a bit high, but pretty clean.

any ideas?

TIA,

David

You could try draining some fluid, but 4L60E's are weak. I broke my tranny 3 times last year. I would take it to a shop and have a pro look at it. Do not take it to the cheapest shop, take it to a big well know shop in your area. That's my .02

I'll try draining some fluid this weekend, but I'm not overly optimistic. On a positive note, Lashway is within distance of 1st gear

I have never heard of good results from a local transmission builder (in general, not just this area)... I'd go with a Performabuilt transmission with a 2 year warranty.. they're a sponsor, so they'll do you right, and you dont hear of many breaking..

No sense in guessing at this point. Rebuild or replace it.

It is indeed. I'm already scouting for an upper m6 console. It's going to be good to have a manual again.
