Thinking about going C5, need advice on difference in model years
Hey all,
I have had my 99 Z/28 for 6 years now, and I'm thinking about getting into something a little more exotic ala C5 Corvette. I have found a few fine examples for sale online at dealerships and private listings, but one that catches my eye is a 99 pewter M6 convertible with 27k miles on it for $22,900 at a Nissan dealership. In the event I decide to do this, I'll probably try and talk them down and also trade them my F-body so I can wash my hands of it without dealing with selling it on my own.
I know that the F-bodies finally had most of the kinks worked out in the 2001 model year (LS6 intake, no EGR, better clutch, no piston slap etc), but how do the 99' Vettes hold up? I feel that I may be able to get a good deal on this one, but is there anything I should look out for? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys. I am aware of the FRC coupe and its raw performance characteristics, however I will most likely end up with a targa coupe or a vert since they offer a little bit more sunlight. My Z is a hardtop and I sure do miss the sun especially since I daily drive a Scion. I'll compromise a little on the performance to have the removable roof at this point

.... wait a minute here.
$22,900 for a '99 ???? .... a C5 Z06 can be had for that price or a bit more ('01-385 bhp / '02, '03 & '04-405 bhp). That is alot of coin for a '99 anything ... !
What "raw performance characteristics of the FRC" are different than any other '99 C5????

Brian,
I was thinking the same thing, but that's the most reasonably priced C5 within 100 miles that has the features I want. It has been sitting on the lot for at least a month and a half. I posted those numbers so you all could chime in and provide meaningful information, and I'm glad you are telling me that I have lots of wiggle room in the price.

I wouldn't do it. A quick search on autotrader found some `01s in the high $18-22K range. Heck, there's a `01 Z for $21K w/ 46K miles and the `02 Z w/ 26K miles for $25K.
Yes, there were some up grades with the `01+. In fact, I think it's the same upgrades as the F-bodies; LS6 intake, new cam and exhaust manifolds.
ETA: you must be patient; unless they come down A LOT, I mean like down to $13K maybe, which won't happen, keep looking. Otherwise you're going to jump on this car and in a month or 2 a `01-02 will pop up w/ similar miles for the same money.

With the low miles I would pay 17-18 k for it, but like others have said I would not pay 22 for it. And honestly if your set on a C5 the thing to do would be to sell your car private party and then look for a corvette since you have a DD and don't HAVE to have it right away. If you try and negotiate with the dealer on the price they will more then likely rape you on the trade it for your car.
And like someone said vettes never had an EGR valve but they originally had a LS1 intake. And honestly with the C6's being out for 5-6 years that really dropped the value of the C5's, I've seen A LOT of late year C5's in the low to mid 20's and some C6's for around 30 k.

IMO that price is good for an asking price. I was searching for a C5 vert this spring.....they bring a decent buck compared to a coupe or hard top. I say go for it other than make damn sure you like that color it is my least fav.

Obviously, a 'vette is a fair-weather car so they are more plentiful in fair-weather states thus better deals can be had. We were just at a dealership over the weekend and they have a yellow '03 Z06 with 60k for $23k before negotiation.
In my car experience, be sure you want to keep that car for a loooong time before paying top dollar for it. Basically, pay it off. I learned that the hard way many, many years ago. The better the deal, the easier it is to trade/sell down the road. If you plan to trade/sell it in a few years, wait for that smoking deal. If you cannot find it in your town, travel for it. I don't have a problem traveling to surrounding states for a great deal.
