Filter Screens?

Filter Screens? I usually run at the track without an air filter and in the past I have seen some guys with filter screens over their inlet. I was just curious on how to make one of these in order to protect my head unit while at the track. Just curious what components you may be able to pick up from the local hardware store to do this if possible.

doesn't look like it would filter any dirt particles, so what's the point of running it? It might protect small pebbles from getting into the inlet, but what are the chances of that happening?

Yeah mainly for just that. I wouldn't want to pick anything up too large. Dust and dirt are not very prevalent at the track but you never know. I was mainly just thinking track only instead of completely uncapped. I highly doubt they are more restrictive then the normal filters though. Just looking for some thoughts on this mainly.

We had a screen on my brothers turbo on his turbo LS1 supra, and by simply removing the screen it picked up 14whp and 45 lb/ft when we had it on the dyno .

Because it has a stupid mesh with lots of small holes for air to pass through, with wire covering a substantial portion of the surface area of the opening.
A complete and utter waste running such a thing. It will filter **** all apart from big stones. So really, why would anyone bother unless they were desperate ?
If there isnt room for a filter, make room.
Pretty sure Vizard tested these things years ago on little normally aspirated engines where people put them on the carbs, and even on those he said they were pointless and restrictive.
Unless you have the turbo intake pointing forwards at the front of the car ( ie fender like a full on race car ) then there really is no excuse for nut running an air filter.
If you are so desperate you must run a screen, at least make a frame to mount it away from the inlet so it offers a much larger surface area. Like a mushroom shape etc.
