Default going forged now have some questions

hi i got some money on the way and i would like to go forged before something happens, right now i just have d1sc, stock bottom end, 317 heads, blower cam, strait meth, doing 599 on 10lbs right now. So far what i heard the best bang for the buck is just to swap pistons, rods, and use the stock block and crank. If I go this route how far can I push this motor? I also heard that 98's blocks are not that good because they have thin cylinder walls compared to other years. Should I be fine or just get another
ls1 block. thanks

i dont know if the 98 blocks are any different or wont hold power, but its been proven you can make 1k+ whp with good pistons and rods using the stock crank.

From what ive read and my understanding is that the 98's just had weaker rod bolts. and the LS1/Ls6 are the same thing, just the Ls6 had different heads/cam/intake. LS6's also shared its intake with the 01-02 cars. But all the cars shared the same block.

Correct me if im wrong.

also, subscribed

To the OP, most people run 6-10 #'s of boost on the stock bottom. 10#'s is pushing it.

You can use your block and crank, and boost the D-1SC for all it's worth. With a good tune you should not expect to have any problems. Bob

It been a while since I have read info on this but some 01 and most 02 f-bodies came with ls6 BLOCKS not motor as a whole ls6. The block if Im not mistaken has larger oil passages for better oiling and more metal in the block in weaker areas. In my opinion you need to find what power goals you are looking for and build around that with a little play. for instance.... If you are at 599 right now with a 98 stock block and you want maybe around 700-800 then keep with your 98 block and upgrade you rotating assmb. If you wan more than that I would look into at LEAST a ls6 block or even a 6.0. Good luck bro

thanks for the info guys im going to use my stock block maybe go with a aftermarket oil pump because of the oil passes on the block as mentioned above. Should I go with different heads or keep the 317's?

Pick up a ported ls6 oil pump from TSP. When I did my cam swap I went from about 40psi to 60psi. Nice pump

well oil pressure and volume can work together but are two different things. Yes the ls1 stock oil pumps are very good but using more volume can help. The prted units are very good and will help alot. to the OP, guys have been 8's qtr and 1000rwhp on STOCK casting 317's > it all depends on your power goals and boost pressure....you have too much cylinder pressure it will lift the stock 317. thats when you will want a thicker deck head. If you arent going more than 16-18lbs of boost on the motor then stick with the 317's hope this helps...good luck!

dont run the 98 block, the cylinder sleeve walls are thinner, the sleeve was not designed the same as the later blocks and can not take boring of any kind, a max of .005 hone, not even a .020 boreing. the 98's have differences in the oiling too, although im not sure of the details. Either way, the 98 is a one time use block so if anything happens after you build it then you will automatically require a new block. keep the crank and find a good build able block

If your wantin to forge it then I would go with the Wiseco/K1 combo. They sell that combo for a pretty damn good price.

man it really depends on the hp you are going for....Use your block bro if you are staying under 1000fwhp. I am telling you the difference in cylinder wall thickness to a ls1 is very minimal. I cant actually remember the difference but its not much. People have said you can boost a ls7 because of the cyl wall thickness either and look at tons of these guys putting 20-25lbs on then at least! somewhere like 1500hp on the ls7's...Dont be afraid to use your block if you just want to max the d1. Even Bob from Brute stated above to use the block and crank....I would trust him any day with my car or anyone elses at that matter
BTW Wiseco teamed with K1, so if you want you should be able to get that package at just about any sponsor who deals with wiseco. Or even get them from wiseco.com. It should be cheaper thru a sponsor though. Good luck

No I believe they are closer to comparable of a scat or eagle rod. I dont run k1's and havent looked into them at all but have heard good things about them
