Which gears to go with on my F1-A/408 setup?
Just curious what you guys reccomend. My general setup is built t56, Moser 9'' w/3.89's, F1-A procharger, 408, etc..
The car is more of a street car and I am wanting a bit longer gears so I was thinking of switching to 3.50's or 3.70's? Any input is appreciated.

I would think a longer gear would be better since you're not exactly hurting for torque with the bigger cube and F-1A. If it were me, I'd switch to the 3.50s. I have 3.73's in my factory ten-bolt, and I'm considering either a taller tire or going with 3.42s as first and second gear for me is useless and third gear goes by in a blur.

with my 3.42s and much less torque than you see with your 408 my first gear and most of second is toast with my 347 d1sc setup. I think 3.42s are as high as I would go though.

With the tires you have I'd go with 3.70 for sure with 6600-6800rpm shift point it will be a nasty setup..
Here is my friend old Procharged Z28 3.42 gears 275/45/16 tires shifting around 6700rpm

Do u track race it, street race it from a dig, or want to roll race it. Each one might need different gears. I have a D1 and have 700+ tq and it does not hook on the street with DR and 3.73's. Wish I would have gone with 3.08 gears.

Basically do you want to tame it down a bit for the street or have it optimized for the track? I went with 3.73 with a 28" tire for my 402/F1A setup. I don't expect it to hook at all on the street but that gearing and tire should put me right at the top of 4th in the 1/4 with a 6 speed. Looking back on it I don't know if the car will ever see the track with the t56 so I probably should have had a 4l80e in mind when I picked the gearing but the same concept. There are gearing calculators online that you can enter in your transmission, tire, rear gearing ect and it will show you the speed and rpm for each gear. Figure out about how fast it should trap and gear it so you are close but not over your limiter. Getting it to actually hook on the street or track will probably take some effort. I don't expect to ever get mine to hook on the street with a drag radial. I just don't like the idea of gearing it wrong to make it not spin. Kinda like reducing the power so you don't spin. On the street a less powerful car that hooks could easly outrun a way more powerful one that's spinning. The more powerful car needs to figure out how to get more traction. Just my way of thinking and I have the 1/4 in mind not so much street driving so my thinking might not matter to you. Looking at some gearing calculations might help though.

Ive a 3.27 rear on my car with 255/40x17 tyres.
Generally it works very well. Although it does leave 6th gear a bit tall. 3.55 is better but leaves 4th gear a bit short when racing.
Isnt anything in between for the 8.8" axle though
Id think anywhere around 3.42 would be good though. Certainly nothing shorter than that.

I know this is an old thread, but I am in the same boat as the op and didn't want to star a new thread. 408/F1-A, 12psi, T56, 9", and unsure of what gear to use. It will see the track maybe once, and might see some digs on the street. It will be 95% roll raced. And almost daily driven. Any gear recommendations? Thanks. And sorry for the tread jack.

3.70 gears are what I used with my 408/F-1A. Here is a video of it. Bob
