sounds like the syncro is trashed or you stripped the dog gears on the speed gear

I paid $400 labor to have my transmission rebuilt, and that was with me removing it from the car

for a new 2nd gear probably around $125, a new 1-2 synchro another $125, depending on mileage you'll mostly want new blocker rings so $175, assuming everything else is in okay shape (you usually find few things worth replacing even if they work fine) probably $100 for whatever fork pads, seals, slider keys, snap rings, etc

if you take it out, and took it to a good shop, if everything worked out i wouldn't see why it would take more than a day to do the actual rebuild. $400 dollars seems very cheap for a rebuild, i'd expect more like 600+ but all depends on what it broken. tear it out and pull the cover and see what you find!

Definitely sounds like the engagement teeth on 2nd gear have been stripped. We've seen it happen OFTEN in pre-2000 T56 transmissions; that is why we offer the Viper 2nd Gear upgrade as on option during every rebuild we do.

Our T56 Rebuild pricing is here, keep in mind that these prices include shipping both ways:http://www.tickperformance.com/categ...-%26-Trans-Am/
