Default Oil change

How many miles do you guys change the oil if you run synthetic?

Just turned 17'000 and curious. The previous owner was ritual about changing it. He changed it at 513, 1036, 2992, 6304 miles. I changed when I first bought the car with 14,000 miles.

Are ls1 more temper mantle and need an oil change every 3,000 miles?

Thanks

I change mine between 3000-4000 and run royal purple. Cheap insurance and were in extreme conditions. Your owners manual won't tell you what extreme conditions are so change it at what the oil companies say...

LS1s use oil due to their design but, they don't burn it.
You want oil burning, go buy a Ford.
If you change oil at 3k intervals, you can use just about anything decent.
Your wasting cash if you change it at 3k and use Syns.
I use RP and don't pay attention to that stupid light that comes on sometimes.
I check the oil condition and swap filters out then top off.
If I see dirty oil, I change the oil.
Sometimes I change it around 2k miles, sometimes at 5k.
It depends on how it's being driven and under what conditions.
People who use highways a lot get better oil mileage than stop an go driving, which is tough on oil.

I change the filter at 3,000 and top off, keep an eye on color and will do a complete change between 5-6000. I currently use German Castrol 0-30W Synthetic. I have used Amsoil in the past and liked it. May switch back Amsoil as the cost of major synthetics like Castrol, Mobil1 are pretty much on par cost wise with Amsoil now.

You are wasting synthetic oil if you are changing it every 3k miles. IMO you can run synthetic oil to 10k with no issues if you wanna be frugal about it. However, gearheads tend to change their oil much more frequently.

The more you change it the more fresh it stays. Whicj means the cleaner the engine. I do it ever 3000.

I change mine everyone 5000 miles with various different motor oils. After trying several out, I am sticking with Mobil1 5w30.

Thanks guys!

Pros/ reviews on the royal purple....

One place suggested it, but I know sales guys will try to squeeze every dime out of you. I know royal purple is good, but not sure what real effect were better then synthetic.

Car is not driven hard, weekend ride. Put 3,000 miles on it this year. Car is all stock for now new house to deal with. Still fun and love my SS though.

When I had RP, it seemed to last longer...I drove a little over 5000 miles in 5 weeks from Texas to California and back. When I took it in to get changed, I checked right before and still look almost the same as the day it when in there. That is the only Pro to RP, I am sticking with Mobil1 because its a little cheaper and easier to find where I live.

This.

I change the oil on my CTS-V (daily driver) when the display says it's time. That's about 6-7K miles. I use Mobil 1.

The oil in my Mazda CX-7 (wife's daily) has a turbo 4 banger and I change it every 6K miles. I use Mobil 1.

I run AmsOil severe duty in my PSD. I change the oil every year, regardless of miles (tow vehicle and bad weather daily). I put maybe 8K a year on it. I do change the filter every 6 months. Blackstone labs reports have told me I'm changing it way too often.

I run AmsOil 20W50 severe duty in my road race car (LT1). I change it every off-season (24 30 minute races) with a new filter mid season. Blackstone has also told me I'm changing it too often. I regularly see 280-300* oil temps.

Changing it at 3K miles is a hold-over from years gone by when oil refining and additive along with filter technology was not where its at today.

I find it laughable that many enthusiasts will insist on 3K or less intervals, using expansive lubricants, but never cycle the brake fluid.

my turbo car i change it after every track outing or after every couple hundred miles Gets expensive but oh well, its insurance...Used primarily mobil 1 in that but may change to amsoil.

the more you abuse the car the more often you should change oil IMO.

I flush my brakes once a year. change my tranny fluid in my duramax every summer when I had a boat. Change my camaro oil about once a year since I only put at 2500 on it a year. Change my escalade oil every 3500-4500(wifes car).I guess it pays to have a shop and do it yourself.

Really just depends on how high your oil temps get. Highway pulls to 160 will cook oil quite quickly syn oils tend to not cook as easily and shed heat faster. Im with others, keep an eye on the color and debris.
