GM probably says .040" over 3.779" or 3.819" is the max they recomend being that .040" over-size pistons is the largest size listed for 5.3's at the parts retailers ............that's what I'm guessing ,,,,,,I have'nt seen this info from GM , but I do know there is a thread in gen3 internal engine from about 3 or 4 months ago where the OP talks about how he had a 5.3 bored to 4.001" or whatever the stock standard 6.0 bore is and he sonic checked the cyl walls and he says that they were still thicker than a .060" over gen1 350's walls . I'm not sure I would go that route but I would definately go to the standard 3.899" ls1 bore ,,,,,,,,,standard so I could always bore over later down the road if I wanted to rebuild it again . I would have done that to my 5.3L if I had known this at the time I purchased pistons/rings/had bored . Quite a few 5.3L owners are doing this when rebuilding .
