Why would you not want to upgrade the cam? To answer your question maybe 10 to 15 hp

there is a thread in the dyno section detailing this, it works great and is good for anywhere from 350-400whp depending on what boltons you have. Im going this route again in the spring as well

417whp 425wtq with stock cam:

Way more then that probably closer to 40hp for the heads. Think about it, LS1 rated at 345hp- LS6 rated at 405. Only difference is heads and cam and intake. Cam alone is only 10-15 and an intake is maybe 10. That leaves another 35-40 on the table from the heads imo.

Ive found these heads at junkyards for 150 for the pair, IMO for that price i dont think you can find a better $ to HP mod. At that price of course.

I would hope a set of nicely ported 243s would gain more than that even on the stock cam. People have seen more than that with stock castings, so a nice port job should provide even more. While the cam may not be the most efficient way to use up all the airflow provided by these, they are still a great deal better than stock 241s.

The single most important factor when it comes to buying heads is to match them to your cam. Spend the extra $700 and get a cam and truly benefit from the upgraded heads.

I agree aswell, without a cam its like changing your oil without doing the filter!

i did what you are talking about along with slp 1.85 roller rockers on the stock cam and picked up about 40hp to the wheels. the rockers usually account for about 10hp so that leaves 30 from the heads.

Take it from someone who has done it. i didnt have the funds to get the cam at the time because then i would also need a converter to make it work right and thats a whole lotta $ especially after install costs.

Ill finally be doing the converter next week and the cam in the spring but the 243 heads on the stock cam has been an awesome combo for the past year or so that ive had it this way. pulls real hard and zero loss of driveability.

I remember when I did this on my car everyone told me I'd gain almost nothing.... That was a couple years ago. After doing it I noticed a huge gain in gas mileage and a pretty decent gain in power. I never put it on a dyno tho. If you were closer I'd sell you my ls6 cam for like 50 bucks, but the shipping and duties from Canada will kill you. Do your heads right, put on decent springs and you'll not only be ready for that cam swap when it comes time. But you'll gain completely streetable power with no compromise and better mileage. If you're on a budget at least get them milled. If you really want an ls6 cam figure out shipping from where I'm at. If its worth it you might have found a cam.

i think you need to stop stalling and get those heads and get you a custom built cam. i know a guy where im from that is supposed to do pretty well with building a cam to your liking and itll give you the performance you want out of your car... lol
