What's so great about the LS6 oil pump?
Based on a lot of threads here, I bought an LS6 pump for my 403 build. It didn't seem like using the original oil pump was a great idea.
So, I got a brand new LS6 pump from the dealer, and after seeing the "made in Mexico" sticker, I decided to take it apart to see how it compared to my original LQ9 pump as well as an "unknown" pump I picked up some time ago. I believe it was a freebee given to me along with my oil pan.
So, here they are. New LS6 pump on top, unknown pump in the middle, my LQ9 pump on the bottom. The unknown pump and the LQ9 pump were both made in canada:
Back sides:
Taken apart:
Now, here's the real pisser. Here's a close-up of the exit port of the new pump:
And here's the exit port of the unknown used pump:
The exit port of the stock LQ9 pump looks pretty much the same as the unknown one.
So, to me, the LS6 pump looks like a piece of crap. I'm inclined to just use the unknown or the LQ9 pump. They both look brand new inside, and appear to be made a hell of a lot better than the LS6 pump.
Another option would be to harvest the gears from the new pump and use the old housing, but then I couldn't return the new pump.
What's supposed to make the LS6 pump so great? It's obviously not the build quality! Is the pressure bypass spring different?
Opinions?
