Default Questions on Tune

If I wanted to get my car tuned...well I don't have the first idea of how to approach someone with that. What all goes into a tune? What will a tune change about my car? How much HP will it add with my current mods? Will it affect MPG's? Reliability? How much do they cost? Where can I get one at?

with your mods a good tuner will have it so it runs like stock. my H/C/I setup while needs some minor adjusting is very streetable.

with your mods gas mileage shouldnt be much worse if at all.

a tune should cost around 3-500. get a trans tune also. that should be included.

id also get a stall and LTs.

Runs like stock? What do you mean by that?

And what are the things they tweak to get more power out of it? How much HP can I expect to gain?

id guess youll gain 10-15 with your mods.

with a good tuner you shouldnt have any driveability problems.

Tunes vary from shop to shop but in NC a decent tune will run around $500. But honestly with just an exhaust and a lid I wouldn't even bother. At most your probable looking at 5-10 RWHP. I would invest in other mods that will make a bigger impact (TB, stall, headers, etc) and wait until you get more mods before a tune.

And like someone else said a tune mainly changes the A/F ratios and shift points for auto's. So if you were too have a huge cam, larger intake and full exhaust, the cars stock tune will not be delivering the proper A/F ratios for the setup. So a tune will match the PCM with the mods. But in your case a catback and lid are not going to change the setup enough to through off the stock tune. .

I am just a hobbyist tuner and the first thing that comes to mind close to your car is my buddys ss convert auto car with 3.23's , lid , loudmouth , vette servo ,shift kit .

on its stock tune it ran 13.6 @103 when I put my wideband on it with those mods it was running 14 to 1 afr at wot - way lean. it would squawk second gear on a wot upshift.

after tuning it for 12.5 to 12.8 afr at wot it would kick sideways on a second gear shift and ran 13.3 @106 - if he had let me remove more torque management it would be a 12 sec car , again its a heavy *** convertible and its air fuel ratio is now safe which is as important as making power unless you like mechanical damage.

make sure if you are payaing an actual tuner that they are reputable and have good references on here... if no one here has heard of them i wouldnt pay them to touch an ls1. If your looking for mail order i would start with tuned by Frost I have read many posts liking his tunes and know from hp tuners forum that he is extremely knowledgeable on remotely tuning this platform
