Default Turbo size comparison

Hey folks, I was wondering about turbo physical sizes. What is the physical size difference between a T66, a PT88 with a T4 housing and an S400 (probably 80) with a T4 housing?

I'm leaning towards the S400 because I believe it is smaller and will fit better in my rear mount application. I also believe that the S400 would spool up faster than the PT88. I believe Zombie's final setup had an S480 rear mounted, IIRC.

Please post pics if you have them! .

Also, if there is someone that could explain turbo sizing, like small frame, mid frame, and large/"thumper" frame that would be very useful information I believe. What about the different compressor/turbine wheel sizing and trim levels? What do the trim levels mean?

[IMG][/IMG]I think Zombie is using a S380 which would be the compressor cover on the left, middle is a TC76, small cover is a T67.

3 different S380's, on the left is a S380 with race cover 83mm billet comp, 92mm turbine wheel. center is a 80mm comp, 83mm turbine, right is a 80mm comp with race cover and 87mm turbine.

Perfect. Thank you Mike! The S380 seems to be quite a bit bigger than the TC76. I was hoping they would be more similar in size as I don't have a whole lot of room... These are pictures of my T66 installed in my STS style kit.






It looks like the oil return elbow is the lowest point of the turbo kit...

Because the S400 I'll be getting is going to be a T4 flange, it should be the same size outer dimension turbine housing, right? Your S88 is a T6, right?

The pt76gts is only slightly bigger on the compressor side than your t66. It should bolt right in and is probably the biggest ( small) frame Turbo you can get. Pt88 shares the same comp as the 76 but has a larger center section and exhaust housing.

So, I just got off the phone with Justin at Comp Turbo. I'm a little impressed.

They have a CT43-8079 turbo that has an 80mm turbine. It is about the same size as the T66 turbo I had and actually weighs less because of the aluminum center section.

With a triplex bearing, billet race cover, and no water cooling the turbo should support up to ~1300hp. The race cover is a $100 option over cast. Water cooling is an option and doesn't cost any more with or without it. The cost Justin gave me was $1350 plus shipping.

Does this turbo sound too good to be true? Smaller than the S400/PT88, but able to flow as much or more air? Also, these units are said to spool up quite a bit faster than the S400/PT88 units.

What do you guys think?

I upgraded from a TC76 to a PT7875 and haven't looked back. The comp side is about 1" larger and the exhaust side isn't much larger at all. Spool difference is minimal and hp is up almost 200.

nubs if you want more ground clearance rotate your exhaust tubing so your turbo flange is closer to parallel to the ground. It will tuck the turbo up closer to the bottom of the gas tank heatshield. Also pull the exhaust pipe up closer to the heatshield.

Thanks, as you can tell I'm a big fan of the BW S380 series of turbochargers, I installed it on the car but haven't had a chance to really run it hard. But rolling into the boost 3-5lb's it feels strong.

My friend is going to run a 80 comp/ 87 turbine on his 346 turbo build.

Thanks for the suggestion on getting more room, mike. I noticed there was quite a gap but I didn't get around to adjusting it. The motor spun a bearing a couple of weeks after I got the car.. on a side note I'll be selling all the parts from that motor, I decided to upgrade... why not, right?

Outlaw, the T4 PT88 doesn't look a whole lot bigger at all. Thanks for the picture.

I run the 8079 on a front mount 347 afr 225's & custom cam. I posted pics, vids, examples but they didn't want to hear it in that other thread so I erased them all. 18 psi on a 18# spring = no back pressure in my experience.

I can't explain what's going on with that kids car without seeing his setup who knows. Just doesn't add up at all.
