LQ4/LQ9 sprint car questions
Hello guys,
I am looking at trying to add the LS based LQ4/LQ9 to our rules for next year as an option but I have a few questions.
The cars are wingless with a direct drive sprint car setup.
The block needs to be iron so that why I chose the LQ's. I would only like to allow a cam, valve sprint and rod bolt change for the engine everythine else must remain as stock as cast. Once I find a cam that makes the best power it will become a spec item.
The idea is to lower the 10-15k price tag on the current gen 1 SBC motors back to what they should be and produce a cheaper option.
Fuel will be methanol or E85 depending on cooling.
Car will be a stock bore 500cfm holley 4412 all other items in the carb are open.
So now onto the questions:
What kind of power can I expect at the crank with a 500cfm carb and the best cam/ valve spring combo.
What can I turn a stock motor to lap after lap without issue?
What do you think needs to be done to the motor to help it survive? The motors will be wet sump only as opposed to our current drysump package.
The cars right now make between 425-500hp with the 500cfm carbs on methanol, I am looking to get into this ballpark with a junkyard 6.0 or even 5.3 if possible.

500 carb is going to choke it pretty good. Also what are the intake rules? Obviously your going to have to allow aftermarket intakes to run a carb.
In my experience, I built a 370 for a modified...
All forged internals, 13 to 1 compression on methanol, afr heads with an 850 carb I believe. Solid roller cam with a super victor intake and it ran circles around the 406 small blocks everyone else was running. My down fall was keeping oil in the pan at 7500 rpm coming out of the corners. It finally spun a bearing after 1 season.

Intake is open to any mass produced part. I dont want to allow people to go into the motors other than to freshen them and change rod bolts. This class was started as a more affordable wingless class running basic SBC's that you would find in a pro stock and has gotten out of control over the last five years and the car numbers are dropping.
Guys are now showing up with $30k drysumped motors, custom 20 degree cast iron heads, composite lifters ect. In this class right now if you want 450hp-470hp you will spend $4-$7k if you want 500hp+ you will spend $20k+.
Most the guys in the class want to find a package that is affordable and everyone is on a similar playing field even if its in the 425hp range.
I dont want to spin the motors very high I am thinking about 6200-6500 with the rev limiter.
Car and driver weight is 1650lbs.

Rule changes may be coming but I was looking at other options as well. The bolt on stuff fo the LS motors is still very expensive but theay are a stout production engine.
Its hard to say go buy a $4500 gm604 crate that makes 400hp and is junk if anything happens to it when a $900 LQ9 is sitting at the wrecking yard and will make more than that with a cam swap and a carb.
The front plate above is exactly what I have right now on my Gen 1 but my KSE pump sits where the drysump pump is mounted.
The thing about the LS stuff is I can require all stock long block and I know it will hold up for many races reguardless if its new or a junkyard motor.
That cant be done with a Gen 1 unless its an overpriced crate motor that wont fit the rules if you have to break the seal, not to mention wont make the same horsepower.
