My brother thinks that LQ4s are not LS series(LSx) engines...
So for months now whenever I call a LQ4 or LQ9 engine a "LS" my brother(on ls1tech) corrects me and says that these engines arnt LS engines. He legitimately thinks that LQ engines arnt LS engines, saying that GM wouldn't have used a Q instead of a S if they were.
Anyone else want to chime in on this?
(I have an LQ4 in my '65 Chevelle[4-Door], should I stop telling people I have a "LS Swap"?)

LS is just the common name everyone uses when they refer to Gen III/IV small blocks. The LQ4/9 uses the same architecture as the LS1, just made of cast iron. It would be like saying the ZL1 wasn't a BBC because it didn't use the commonly used "L" for it's RPO designation like the others (L72, L88, LS6, LS7, etc).

I get this a lot too. My friend tried telling me that LSX is race only. I'm like dude, it's just a generic term for all the ls motors. I know that the C5R's had something called LSX in them I think. The LQ motors are just iron block LS motors so they are pretty much the same. They come from the same gene pool ha ha.

I don't think there is anything official on this, but I would consider them to all be "LS" engines, because they were all directly based on the original LS1. I guess the most accurate thing to call them all would be Gen III/IV SBC, depending on the engine.

I consider all gen III GM v8s, where parts are almost fully interchangeable, as part of the same family. "LS" may be an oversimplification, but I don't think it needs "correcting."
When you order parts for your LQ you can tell the guy you need heads for an LS1.. he won't know/care that there's a difference in 99% of the parts.
Ask your brother why it is so many people put 5.3L heads on their Ls1? Ask him what constituties an "ls" motor. What if you change the components? Is it still an Ls?
The only thing I'm picky about is "lq4" and "lq9." The reason I stress over it is when someone says 600WHP LQ4! and then you go to the thread and they say "step 1: put in a rotating assembly with flat top pistons" it's like apples to oranges from then on. The "lq4" is differentiated from the Lq9 BECAUSE of the dished pistons, and if you take that away.. well then it's not an "lq4" anymore imo.
there's a guy ridin around my area that daily drives a late 60s firebird. His tag is "ls1T56." He has HIDs in it, and it seems to run pretty good. I saw a picture of it at autozone behind the customer rides section and asked the guy. He told me "he's got onna them iron 6.0s in it." So.. if it's good enough for his tag.. it's good enough for me.

What i hate is when my cousin bought his 05 silverado 2500hd and told everyone when he showed it to them that is has the corvette motor in it because it was a 6.0 and the
ls2 had just come out in the vettes. He did the same thing this summer with his 09 yukon denali cause it has the 6.2 and the vette has the ls3. It annoys me so much when ever he's talking about it.
I agree that they are all LSX platform engines, GM calles their iron block racing engine the LSX and their aluminum block engines LS on GMperformanceparts.com

I'm pretty sure most people refer to the iron engines as LSX and the aluminum ones as LS1-9.
LQ4 build up = LSX for sure.

They are "ls" based engines so I don't have an issue with that.
But when someone says "iron ls1" or specifically says "ls1 parts" and then you find out its iron block stuff it pisses me off. An ls1 is an aluminum 5.7 liter (or more if stroked)...it is not a 4.8/5.3/6.0 iron block truck motor.

I have a feeling a bunch of guys are gonna want "LQX" merchandise now... The way I see it is, if the only difference is iron vs aluminum, yet the blocks are identically designed (based off of the original LS1) then I can see it being totally fine to refer to them all as LS based engines.

Some of you guys are getting it a little confused. Around her any Gen III/IV motor is an LSx no matter iron/aluminum. An LSX is any motor built off the badass GM LSX iron block...
More specifically the LQ blocks are LS design engines just iron as already stated so yes it is an LS around here....
