Many of the hardcore shops and guru's will recommend shimming valve springs to be .050" to .060" from coil bind. This means you don't need springs capable of more lift because at (a fairly typical) 1.78 to 1.8 installed height you are .080" to .100" from coil bind. They say that being .050" to .060" from coil bind is suppose to increase valvetrain stability and life by reducing spring surge. I think surge is the same thing as having the valve bounce on the seat when it closes. Hopefully someone will correct me if that is not an accurate description of surge.

Here is a post about a guy who broke a 918 with a little 550 lift cam. It seems fairly apparent that the breakage wasn't due to having too much lift for the spring and it is possible that the opposite may have been the case. There is more to springs than just staying under the max lift. Unfortunately I am not a spring expert but I have seen one hi-performance shop and a couple other experts on here recommend a tighter coil at max lift. They know a lot more than either of us at this point. Good Luck with whatever you choose. http://www.performancetrucks.net/for...prings-492511/

The new silver 918s are good to .625" easily. I ran them on .624" lift LSR cam, I shimmed every spring individually to .060" from coilbind. I had to put shims under every spring, even though I was at the "rated" lift limit.

Years ago Comp had a some batches of 918 springs that weren't properly made and prone to breakage. With that said you'll find lots of horror stories of 918 springs breaking. Since then Comp has redesigned the 918 springs, and are now made with better material making them much stronger. The newest 918 springs are rated to .625" lift whereas the older designs are only at .600" lift. You can use the new 918 springs and be safe, but 650" springs will be under less stress and yeild longer spring life and more insurance.

Your comment means nothing, I was asking for info since the springs are right at their limit. No need for a smart *** comment. It seems the springs would be fine but I am going to call texas speed tomorrow and get their opinion also. They are the new style so being able to handle .625 max lift you would think id be ok.
