Default So I'm getting some 799 heads and I have some questions.

So I'm getting some 799's tonight probably get them resurfaced and valve job and back cut. Another question or questions, how much should be milled and where what do I have to do to get the coils working for these heads being that they are going on my 1998 ls1 camaro or do I have buy new valve covers? Or is there a conversion kit? Ideas anyone?

Id mill them .003-.005", just enough to get a clean smooth surface. You will need new valve covers center bolt valve covers as well.

Will I be able to use my TSP 7.4 pushrods off of my stock ls1 heads, or am I going to have to buy new ones as well. Also even if I buy centerbolt valve covers don't I some kind of bracket to hold coils?

Youll have to measure for proper pushrod length in any situation where you make changes. Although the 7.400" will work, they just might not be optimal. Ive run 7.400s blindly in many many dyno sessions and never had a problem. But its different when its your personal vehicle....

I think youll need coil brackets as well, you might even need the coils and coil brackets. I never mess with perimeter valve covers.

If you only surface the heads rather than mill them you can reuse your pushrods but I would check them anyway just in case. You will be close enough you can use them until new ones come if you have to.

You will need: center bolt valve covers, coils, brackets, harnesses (coils/brackets/harnesses should come together for ~$40 per side from salvage, maybe less). Truck coils will work. Just ask for a pair of coil packs for a 2000+ GM V8 (I exclude 99 when I ask because some systems only show 99 as a vortec 350, not a 5.3 liter).

EDIT: If you use the truck coils you will need to bend the fuel rail inlet, this can be done easily by slipping a socket over it and go slow. Only needs to move like 1/8-1.4"

I have a new pushrod checker but have never had to use it. How do you check what size I would need?

Also if I were to mill about .015 or .020 what could I gain from doing this? Or should I just get them resurfaced?

You would get a small bump in compression, but it changes the way the heads flow slightly......

I have a similar setup and will be getting 243/799 by spring and also deciding whether or not to mill them. Please post what you end up doing and numbers you put down!

IMO if you aren't going to get them ported at least try to get some sandpaper rolls and clean up the casting flash and the lip near the intake valve seats.

Mine were absolutely terrible as cast. There were dime sized areas where **** was protruding into the flow path from the port walls and a fairly large step near the seats.

I had mine milled .010"

Throttle response and torque are significantly improved over the stock heads and my old smaller cam. I expected to lose some bottom end with the new larger cam but was delighted to have gained so much.

If I hadn't been getting into the area of having to check PTV clearance I would have milled more.

Quick Reply: So I'm getting some 799 heads and I have some questions.
