Default Head Gasket issues

I posted in another thread about moisture in my oil. Though not real bad, it is milky and brown. I really haven't put much run time on the engine since I re installed the heads. It's a 98 LS1. I bought some head gaskets from a guy off here. They are the multi layer shims for the later model I believe. Anyway, I just read that the later model gasket CAN NOT be used on the 97 and 98 model Gen III LS1. Is this true? Although I will be glad that it's a simple head gasket instead of a cracked block due to my fear of blind threads, it will still suck to pull this engine once again!!! Thanks guys
Shawn

Quote taken from another forum:

"The 97-2000 gaskets used a fibre gasket, for lack of a better description, and had to be used with the older heads (97-98 perimeter bolt valve cover??) due to a notch in the head gasket sealing area that a newer MLS gasket will not seal. The bore sizes for both are the same.

For the newer block and 00 LS1 heads the 2001 and up gaskets should work fine."

And that's my read...

I hope someone can clarify, I don't have my heads in front of me right now but I just ordered some MLS gaskets for my 806 heads and would like to know if I should try and exchange them for graphite.

I would say that You would probably be more safe with the graphite 1's ,,,,,,,,,if I were You I would either message or call a cpl more experienced engine builders and ask them ,,,,,,,,more opinions ,,,,,,better

As far as I know all 806 heads and some later 99-00 853's have the notch. I haven't delt with a set of 806 heads in a few years so I can't say for sure. However, I have 2 sets of 853's in my garage and one set has the notch and one set does not.

SDPC used to have a very good photo and explanation of the notch and the head gasket differences in their catalog. Check their web site and see if the catalog is available for download. It will answer all the questions.

So is it the heads or block that wont accept the new style gasket?

The heads won't accept the newer gasket. You don't see this problem around here much as not many people run with the 806 or 853's. Good info in here.

You will be fine. It all boils down to the head.

I used mls gaskets on my 98 with 5.3 heads, no problem.
