Look like a good cam choice?
Hey guys, spoke to Comp Cams today and they suggested the 224/230 and I just didnt think it was quite aggressive enough so I started browsing around the site and here is what I cam up with.. XR281HR.. Specs are as follows 228 I 230 E with .571 Intake and .573 Exhaust.. I cant tell what the LSA is as the chart shows lobe centerline at 112 and intake centerline at 110.. whats the difference?? They had the complete package for 1038.00.. Springs, retainers, lifters, pushrods, cam.. sounds like a decent price to me but I may be wrong??
Car is an 02 that was bought to be a weekend car but last year I drove it on the street maybe twice and ALL the rest was at the track.. Its a bolt on car with nitrous (150 shot now) stock LS6 intake and stock 241 heads with a stock 4L60E with PerformaBuilt stall/shift kit, and 10 bolt w/3:42 gears.. I honestly dont know what the car is capable of as it sits now since the racing series I compete in has a rule of street tires with a treadwear of 160 or better.. I still havent bolted on the Hoosiers and made a solid run with nitrous.. the nitrous runs I did last year were from the 60ft mark on and ran a 7.53 at 94.. I of course want the aggressive sound you get from a nice cam but since I race the car I also want it to perform. Let me know if you have a better suggestion on cam.

I would say no to that cam. What you can do is find a vendor on here to custom spec you a cam based on what you want and what current mods are on your car. Pat G is a good one, but you could also hit up Vengeance Racing, Thunder Racing, Texas Speed, etc. They all can hook you up. I, myself, am also looking at getting a cam. Since this isn't your everyday driver, I wouldn't be affraid to go bigger than the cam Comp suggested. A 230/238 on a 111 LSA would be a good choice. Would work great with nitrous and have one hell of a nice lumpy idle having 12 degrees of overlap.

I am open to suggestions for a bigger cam and tried to find something on Comp's website similar to the specs you listed but didnt see anything. Having a cam custom ground scares me a little only because of the cost aspect

There really isn't any more cost to get a custom grind cam than an "off the shelf" cam. Most places, like Futral Motorsports (Alan Futral) will charge you like $25.00 to fill out the custom cam grind sheet, but then, they deduct that off the price of the cam, so it all comes out in a wash. Before I sold my AFR heads, I had Ed Curtis (not a sponsor) custom grind me a cam. The custom cam sheet I had to fill out was very extensive, but he needed to know exactly what my goals were, what mods were already on my car, what future mods I might do, etc. With all that info, he was able to custom spec a cam to suite my setup and needs. Long story short, I traded the AFR heads and custom cam to a guy who installed them and dyno'd the car at 450 rwhp with a stock LS6 intake. The cam wasn't big either, 230/236 112 LSA. All of Ed's cams are ground by Comp, but he has proprietary lobes that only his cams get. He does not use the Comp catalog lobes. You'll hear a lot about EPS cams. They are ground by Comp as well, but also are ground on proprietary lobes. If you go with Futral Motorsports, they have Cam Motion grind their cams.

If you are set on a comp grind then the XER281 would be better as it is the fast ramp rate lobes. Specs are on the site , but, I think it is like 230/234 112LSA .590 or so lift. I would look at some of the EPS grinds or get with Pat G on here and get a custom grind thru him.

Ask yourself, do you have a certain HP you are trying to make? Or are you trying to run a specific time.
I honestly dont feel the need to throw a custom cam. Cuz mostly everybody has the same wants, i want to make X amount of hp/tq, and i want to drive it everywhere, and so fourth. So why isnt everybody running the same custom cam?
Nothing wrong with an off the shelf. Only reason i would look into a custom cam is if i had a dedicated drag car, or a bigger cube setup. Other than that, just pick a proven off the shelf cam. People act like these 10 year old fbodies are something new..

Comp Cams #54-458-11(Int. 227 Ext. 235, Lift Int. .614" Exh. .621" LSA 113° ) or Comp Cams #54-459-11(Int. 231 Ext. 239, Lift Int. .617 Exh. .624 LSA 113°).
If you want less lift go with XER lobes, like a 228/236 or a 230/238.
Regardless, before making any decision, see what some of the site sponsors recommend first.

I have been checking around like you guys suggested and there is simply too much information to process lol.. I honestly dont have a HP number in mind because I have always had the mindset that I dont give a damn what it does on the dyno just so long as it puts the numbers down at the track. I actually think its funny when I tell people my car only has 299 whp and they just got SPANKED.. (one dyno pull I did only showed 299 lol) I have put down 327 N/A and 413 spraying 100 shot but converter was unlocked.. I run high 7's in the 1/8 on motor and still dont know what my N2O times would be since I am in a class that mandates a street tire with a treadwear of 160 or better I dont spray until about the 60ft mark (for traction) and ran a 7.53 @ 94.. I can break out of my 7.50 index :-/
Sorry had to come back and edit this post, customer came in and I didnt get to finish.. The goal as of right now for the car is to jump up two classes and run in the 6.50 index (Hot Street) instead of the 7.50 index I am in right now (Real Street).. so my goal with the cam and drag radials is to get as close to 6.50 as I can and let N2O do the rest..

Again there are so many off the shelf cams that will suit your needs that you can search with endless results.
Our fbodies are so old now, and we act like its brand new stuff.
There were guys dipping in 10's years ago with small 220/220, 224/224 cams with ported LS1 heads. There are so many off the shelf cam setups that have proven time again.
