Generation IV Internal Engine - Anyone run more than .060" preload on Morel 5206 lifters?
Purely out of curiosity.
I see that .060" seems to be the suggested preload, where Morel suggests .045-.050" on aluminum head and aluminum block combos, and less on other setups (iron block, aluminum/iron heads, etc.).
I can do .060" but was wondering if there are setups out there with more.
I've read anywhere from .122 to .14x" as the max travel on these lifters.
Any opinions/advice/experience is appreciated.... I'm setting up an ERL LS3 434ci with LPE-ported LS7 heads and GT19 cam (with LPE's ferrea spring/retainer kit for said cam).
Thanks.

.122 to .144 may be the max travel on thes lifters but you don't want to bottom the lifter out. This is why it's hydraulic. You want to set the pushrod depth about midway. So .050 to .060 is fine.

I have Morels and tried half a turn on adjustable rockers (.030) and they were noisy as a sewing machine. I am probably real close to .060 now set cold.

I'm going to wind up at .060" on the exhaust and .065" on the intake with 7.760" long (measured length) pushrods.
I was just wondering if anyone ran more than .060" (more like .070-.080") with the morel lifters (5206 link bar lifters, specifically) ...I know you don't want to bottom the lifter.
Thanks.

I'm at about .060 cold on my 5206 link bar Morels. It's still noisy as hell when the engine is cold. Once up to temp it seems fine :eyes:

Kinda why I was wondering if anyone ran more than .060" with positive results, since it seems many already run more (~ +.010") than what Morel suggests.
I'll see how the current preload setup works for my combo and go from there, I suppose.

We've run .030 to .090 and like people are saying they tend to be quieter with the higher preload like 1 turn down which is about .080 preload.

What are you running for oil (brand/viscosity)?
I'm just over 2k miles into this new bullet. I started with Comp Cams' break-in oil (10w30) and ran it until ~1500 miles (changed three times). After that, I switched to amsoil sig series 5w30... and I can't say for certain if it's the oil or if things are just starting to wear in, but the lifters have quieted down considerably (though still louder than a stock LS7 engine, for example).
For being link-bar performance-type lifters... they're actually not that bad at all, IMO, even with the somewhat tame exhaust system I'm running (longtubes, OR-X, rt.66 B&B cat-back).
So far, I'm really pleased/impressed with this (new to me) LS stuff.... and HPTuners blows away the tuning software available for the 99-04 mustangs. It's great.

I started out with Brad Pen 0w30 with an addative to break it in for about 1000 miles. Switched to Royal Purple 5w30 full synthetic. It start smoking a little bit out the exhaust at times so i just decided to go back to the Brad Pen again. Ever since i switched back zero smoke. It didn't like that synthetic one bit and i think it was too early in the game for it.
The lifters have the same noise on start up cold. It's almost like there are marbles rolling around inside my intake. I think the Fast 102 really amplifies the noise. As soon as it runs for a couple minutes though it goes away.

bump, are you on a iron block?
I'm trying to find proper preload with the same lifters on an iron block with aluminum heads, just trying to see what people are running them at...

Nope, aluminum...
