Wheres my oil?
My car seems to be drinking oil....( Ya Ls1's like it) I recently moved to california from texas , drove 1300 miles and got 23 mpg (3.73's A4 , bolt on/tune etc. The car runs great no ping /hesitation. But I hammered it at 50 mph and saw light smoke in the rear mirror as I was getting on it. After the drive the cross country trip the tail pipes were black/sooty. The oil was low too so I added 3/4 quart. Ive checked the PCV lines NO leaks or cracks I also run a catch can. No leaks under the car . Its always clean underneath.
My question is how much is too much for oil consumption? I run mobil 1 5 w30. Isnt sythetic a thinner oil cause more oil use versus dino ?

My A4 car has always used a quart about every 2000 miles (33k when I bought it, 109k now) in normal driving (mostly city). But it gulps it on long highway trips for some reason at more than twice that rate. I've never noticed smoke or soot though.
My car is very similar to yours: bolt-ons, tune, 3:42s, catch can, no leaks, 24 trip mpg. I've just accepted that this is the way the car is, add oil when it needs it, and don't worry about it.

Years ago mine started to drink oil and sometimes smoke a little under WOT, replaced the valve seals(and pushrods and springs since I was in there anyway) and everything was great, no oil consumption (except a little into the catch can, like half a quart every 3000 miles - but nothing into the engine/intake).
Do the valve seals, its cheap and easy and will likely fix the issue.

the problem could be the LS1 PCV itself. The PCV on the LS1's sometimes force oil out along with the air from the crankcase into the intake manifold. The stock PCV on the LS1 pulls pressure from the valve cover. You can change the PCV out for a LS6 set up that pulls the pressure from the valley cover instead. should fix the problem, it did for mine. Here's a how to (not mine, but very detailed): http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=18
