I have a stock 10 bolt out of my 2002 z28 A4 ... it has 2.73 gears in it and i converted the car to a manual and i was wondering if i buy a new posi unit with 373's will it fit in the housing

You need either A. a thick cut 3.73 to fit the old 2 series posi or B. a 3 series posi and 3 series 3.73 gear. Either will work fine. Do you have TCS? If you do not you will have an ABS reluctor mounted to the posi, so if you replace the posi you will need one with the wheel on it because I don't think they are removable.

Your 2.73 rear has a 2 series posi carrier in it. You need to buy gears for that series carrier. Motive makes 3.73s for a 2 series. Richmond even makes 4.10s for a 2 series although if you have a Torsen posi unit you start to run into clearance issues with the paddle. You don't need to replace the posi unit to step up to a higher ratio gear.
BTW 4.10s are a great match for the M6.

4.10's in a 10 bolt with 2 series carrier = boom!! That thing will blow apart .. Ive been told to find a 3 series carier bc the are stronger for an M6 car

it doesnt matter in a ten bolt. They're all made of glass. I promised myself I wouldn't bolt up drag radials so I could save the ten bolt. It grenaded on the street tires just like all the rest

I've rebuilt a dozen or so 10 bolts. All raced, bunch on DRs and all still alive. I'm a firm believer that a freshly rebuilt 10 bolt is a hell of a lot stronger then a 100k+ mile one.
Here's one of mine dumping at 4 and 5k on DRs. Motive 4.10s, Auburn posi, fresh bearings, stock axles.

i believe you! I just can't justify building one. To each his own I think in this case. I have a built ten bolt in my third gen that was built long before I really knew much about what I was getting into. I feel confident It will last for some time!

My sig shows you what one will hold up to.. And my car doesn't see street tires ever. Yea I've blown maybe 2 gear sets but I'm not out my ass on a high dollar rearend either. I'm running a used set of 3.73's. No issue besides the whine that I've never seen any 10-bolt not do.
But as mentioned to complete irradiate any break downs.. "for the most part" just go bigger and better.
