The knock sensors are basically microphones that "hear" spark knock and input that data to the PCM so it can retard ignition timing.
The LS PCMs have a slick function called the Adaptive Spark Scalar that makes the change more persistent and global, knocking down the entire advance curve in percentages. It does a better job of protecting the engine vs. older systems that simply react to knock when it happens.
