Ok guys... Going to pull my engine this weekend... Tips?
Alright guys, I've got my LQ9 on a stand and am going to pull my LS1 out with the transmission attached...
Is there anything that I will likely forget to unhook? Any tips to speed things up?
When putting the LQ in is it easier to bolt the whole thing together first or should I leave anything for later? I'm primarily concerned about the heads and headers?

I got a tip for yuh hahaha. I pulled mine from the bottom, everyone was kinda like "Yeah let's tear this **** up!" So now there's bolts everywhere around the garage and I can't figure out which goes where. Stay organised! Put everything I'm plastic bags and label them! Damn I wish I did that still. And watch the shifter when you pull it out, mine snagged.

Take your time and and don't rush any thing, keep track of all you parts and hardware. Double check before all wiring harness plugs and ground wires before you start to pull it out.

watch the vacume line for master cylinderat back ofd intake ,small vacume line at the control module to a T at a/c condenser, ground strap at alternater bolted to frame rail. i cut the positive wire out of the three wire bundle on the positive side of the battery and crimped a separate connector on there to tie it on later on so i didn't have to drop the starter, a/c delco makes a stud for the battery for that purpose, take positive loose from alternater, unplug allthat **** of pasenger fender its fresh in my mind i dropped mine out the bottom twice in a year.... the oldman............

I noticed you took the transmission off first. Do you think the hoist will have enough lift to get both the transmission and engine out together?

While the topic is pulling the engine, reinstalling the same is equally important.
For this reason, write down, in numbered steps, the procedure of removing the parts. This way, when the reinstall takes place, you'll know exactly, the correct sequence. This would also include things like..."then, jack up the front end", and/or, "engine hoist boom set to 1/2 ton", etc.
I just went through this. Because I had a written sequence, all went back according to schedule, with no wasted time or labor.

Ok buddy I've done it out the top 4 times and it is much easier if you drop the tranny before you pull it out. I have a plate from TPIS that bolts in place of the valley cover and I can do it by my self with the clutch and pulley still on the long block. You just need to twist the motor about 40* at the point the pulley hits the radiator cross member and you can get it out with out to much effort. BUT it is easier to take the crank pulley off while still in the car and connected to the drive train. If you unbolt the headers before you pull the tranny you can get away with leaving the exhaust completely intact. It is not to bad I have done the entire job in 4 hours after a couple tries but the first time took a little longer. If you take the clutch and pulley off while in the car you won’t have a problem getting it out. Just be careful of the AC lines. Be sure to listen to the above comments about bagging and labeling your bolts.

go bottom, I did it by myself following LS1howto.com..
nobody helped me at all, and I have a shitty tool set..
if not you'll have to drop the tranny and drip oil everywhere and it's hard to take the Torque converter bolts off while under the car and someone turning the engine ughhh...
anyway goodluck either way..

I've never done it out the bottom so I can't say what is easier but I don't have enough room to leave my car without front wheels for very long. It was better for me to be able to roll my car out of the way while I built a new motor than having my car held up by a picker during the week. If I had more room or a lift maybe I would have looked at going out the bottom. P.S. I did it everytime by my self with basic tools also.
