Default Newb Cam Question?

Hey... Got a quick question? I am kinda new to the game and don't really know what im doing. I have a 1998 Z28 Camaro w/ 116k on it, with a cutout a lid and a k&n filter. I was looking into other engine mods and I see that alot of people recomend getting a new cam. What would this do for my times? How much other mods would i have to make to copensate for the larger cam? What is the best one for the money? Is this the right mod for my car? If anyone can answer any of these questions i would be much abliges. thanks

Is your car an auto or manual?

Do all the free mods and boltons first. If you're an A4, get a torque
converter.

When you come around to doing the cam, you'll need to upgrade your
valve train. Depending on how big a cam you decide on, you need to
upgrade to either beefier single springs or possibly dual springs. You'll
also most likely want to get titanium retainers as well. Ask some of
the sponsors, they are very helpful about matching up the right cam for
your situation. Also, do a bunch of searching in internal engine section.

www.ls1howto.com has a good cam change tutorial, as well as a nice
brief overview on cam selection.

You should look in to headers and y-pipe, and an ls6 intake before you go for a h/c.

What would this do for my times?
Lots!

There are people in the 10's with well set up cars and stock heads with an aftermarket cam.

How much other mods would i have to make to copensate for the larger cam?
Exhaust is first, then look to the intake side.

Gears for a manual car depending on how big the cam is, and a converter no matter what for an auto.

What is the best one for the money?
Depends on what you want to do with the car.

(So tell us!)

Is this the right mod for my car?
Yes! The stock cam is weak! Even the small cams without huge lift/duration numbers are a still a whole lot better than the stock cam and will give great gains, even if you still want a stock idle.

You can get a h/c package that will run you about $1500, or you can get a relativly smaller cam that you can run off your stock heads for about $400. Just depends on your piggy bank and how much power you want.

You would need full exhaust to benefit most from a CAM. I went with a Futral Motorsports one and have been very satisfied. There cams have been putting down great numbers while keeping it very streetable.
