Excited about my lq9 ls3 l92 budget combo build
well after lots of research, reading and analyzing others combos (thanx to alot of folks on here and other forums), i have decided on my combo build and i am excited about it. i expect to complete in the next several months and figured i share with you all as others have.
well unlike most of you, maybe all of you lol, i have a truck. it is a low2001gmc duh.... anyway, while it has a nice 6.0 lq4 with 243s, the plan is to upgrade to an lq9 with ls3 heads and an ls2 portworks l92 intake.
since it is a budget build, ive had to be patient and wait for deals to come up slowly but surely. i bought a rebuilt lq9 shortblock off here with clevite bearings, mahle rings and arp rod bolts. i then purchased some used ls3 heads clean up milled .005 with lightweight valves of course and new psi 1511 springs. next i came across an ls2 portworks ported l92 intake. from my research, a stock l92 intake outflows a stock ls3 intake so even more should my ls2 portworks flow. cory at ls2portwworks looks to do awesome work and since i got a truck the l92 intake fits under my hood . i have decided i will have the heads milled another .010 for a total of .015 as recommended by spinmonster on corvette forum where i can raise my compression and minimally affect the ls3 heads flow. also i will run cometic 4.085 .040 gaskets to further raise compression to 11:1 while improving quench. i will also have the exhaust ports and bowls touched up to help exhaust flow but leave the intake ports completely unmolested as they already flow dramatically there. i also got me some sharp trunion upgraded l92 rocker arms. as for cam, this truck is my daily driver so i went conservative with a comp cams 228-232, 588-595, 114+4 i just bought off a member on here and am waiting on. i wanna shift at about 6400 and maintain a rev limiter of 67-6800 rpm since it is not a forged motor and has to be a reliable daily also so longevity plays a factor as well as budget. i will use my existing pacesetter 1 3/4 ceramic headers, march underdrive pulley, fast 92 cable driven tb, msd wires, etc. for tranny, i just a got a rebuilt with superior shift kit 4l80 with a new fti 3800 stall. rear end is an 8.6 gm truck with truetrac posi and 4.11s. got some caltracs also.
hope you all dont bash me and mind having a truck guy post up on here but i am thankful to all i have learned from on here, i am excited and wish to share and give back to this great website community.
any ideas, tips or advice are always welcomed as long as sincere and not jerks about it as i have seen some folks.
good luck with you all's projects... rob

I don't think many, if anyone will give you a hard time about running a truck. After all yours is good for more than going fast and looking good. Good luck on the build I'm gearing up for a 3rd gen bird ls 396 l92 head stroker build. Waiting for deals sucks!

My car is 10yrs old and I have a mortgage! Lol. I found a super low mileage L92 short block that I based my build on. Im keeping the bottom end stock since its really clean. I got LS3 heads from GMPP and a TSP cam, 231/236 .644/.615 114lsa. Aiming for high 10's. The car is right at about 3000lbs without a driver.

i like the vette's blue color, looks really nice. sounds like a great combo there for a car weighing 3000 lbs . i would recommend some sharp trunion upgraded rockers though. thanx for sharing and best of luck

I will do a bearing upgrade very soon but with a correctly setup valvetrain they can still last a while. My friend is going on 3yrs with stock rockers on his 800hp G8 GXP.

a few more details on my project build. i painted intake to give it a slightly different look. check out the porting on the intake. in case you are wondering if it flexes on top, it does a little but i can live with it in exchange for the extra flow. i also painted my coil brackets to give them some detail. that exhaust port in pic was a lil off on the right side but i eventually got it perfect to how i wanted it before we installed heads. im proud of my porting.

babying still my new motor....lol....power feels good....seems like a lil less bottom end than with 243s but i wanted that trade off being that i have a truck with light rear and having traction issues even with caltracs. havent pushed it yet as far as top end which again is part of trade off i was after. the jury is still out on it to be fair. .

traction problems from standstill til past 75mph that i let off...lol...but now looking at cam swap to lunati 60512, 232-238, 599-601, 113+4 for increased top end espcially with my awesome fti 3800 stall and ls3 heads. cam has been ordered and next i hope for some tsp 1 7/8 headers
