Default Magnetic oil drain plug & Synthetic oil...??

Hey All,
Just chainged my oil for the first time since installing the magnetic oil drain plug. This is my second oil change at 3K miles. When I removed the plug there was some metallic 'Gunk' on the end of the plug. Not enough to be concerned with a new engine, but there was some stuff there none the less.

After removing the gunk and smearing it around between my fingers and smearing it onto a paper towel it looks like it may be graphite?? Is this possible. It has a very 'slick' texture and is silver when smeared onto the paper towel. Anything to be worried about? Is the plug removing the graphite from the oil?

TIA,
-Nick

Pat, u around?

Does todays synthetic (Mobil 1 5W30 Tri-Synthetic) have graphite in it? Would it accumulate on a magnet?

Graphite isn't magnetically-attractable to my knowledge. Most likely you got fine metal wear materials, coated with oil. Nothing to worry about and pretty much a fact of engine lifespan, even with great oil.

My car has a magnetic drain plug from the factory it seems... I get the same sort of graphite-like material on the drain plug and it wipes off if I put my finger on it. I don't think it's anything to worry about... mine's been like that since day one.

I also had the same type of gunk, (a small amount) everytime I changed the oil on the drain plug.

It's metal boys..... that's why it's stuck to the magnet.

Yeah most of them have a small amount of "goo" to the best of my knowledge ... also graphite is not metallic, and would not get stuck to a magnet.

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I did not think that graphite would stick to a magnet...I know my pencil does not . Just a very small amount of VERY fine metal I guess.
