Fueling & Injection - Is there a trick to getting the fuel pump out of the tank?

I am in the midst of replacing a bad regulator in my 1999 Z28. So far, everything has gone very smoothly. I have the tank out and am ready to remove the pump.

But, now its fighting me. It appears that I should be able to simply turn the metal ring counterclockwise enough for the clips to clear the slots and lift it right out. See photo below to see what I am trying to describe.

However, it won't budge. I'm afraid if I put any more force on it than I already have, something is going to bend or break. Am I missing something?

I have done a number of searches and can't find any posts where anyone else had this problem.

I couldn't budge mine either a couple months ago. I just gave up lol. I felt like I was going to break the plastic thing right off.

have some one stand on the tank, get a flat head screw driver and hit the ring counter clockwise, sometimes spraying some wd-40 helps around ring.

Yes, use a big flat head screw driver and a hammer, and tap the metal ring loose. Hit it where the red arrow is pointing! (attached picture)

Just be careful not to gouge the plastic tank. You dont need to hit it that hard. Small light taps should get it loose

I had to hit mine pretty hard to get that ring off,just take your time and be careful not to hit the tank

how are you replacing the regulator? it is integral to the fuel pump module itself.

and like said you need to hit the golden colored ring counterclockwise with a screwdriver.

Thank you and everyone else for the advice. I was able to get if off this morning.

Mine was more like nitrousshark's and required that I hit it pretty hard! I actually used a large flat ended punch and tapped it with a mall. I was able to remove it without leaving marks on the ring nor did it scuff the tank.

Actually, it is replaceable. The regulator is near the top of the pump as shown in the picture. You remove the little clip then pull the regulator straight out.

well aint that a bitch. i've replaced 2 modules in the last 2 months (original and the first replacement) because everything i've seen says you cannot get the part anymore. i knew it came out, and it looks similar to the truck regulator thats on the rail but i searched for days and everyone said it was obsolete. i even have a friend at the local dealer that told me the OEM part was no longer produced, so maybe just aftermarket stuff and old stock now.

my OE pump had perfect pressure, just bad regulator, oh well, live and learn.

LOL, i PMd you about a pump and you told me it was probably the regulator, i forgot to ask you if you had any.....

I thought this was gonna be about how to take out the bucket because the hole in my tank seems to be a bit small. Last time I took mine out I had a hell of a time. It seems like putting in the bucket is an easy thing to do but to pull it out, its a bitch!! Anyone have any any trick on how to pull out the bucket. I may have to pull out my new double pump bucket to see why one of the pumps isnt working.

i've never had a problem pulling the bucket out. well, no more problem than any other vehicle. just move it side to side as you bring it up and usually it'll come right out.
