Default Better motor choice? LS1 383 Stroker or LS2 364?

Ok I'm starting to gather parts for my build. I currently have a LS2 block, Callies Rods, and Wiseco 4.005 pistons. While I was at work tonight I was starting to wonder if I would be better off just building a 383 stroker and using my block. I can't afford a stroker for the LS2 so I called up a buddy and ask him if he would be interested in the block I have and that along with the cost of the a few other things I would need for a LS2 in my 98 C5 would offset most of the cost of a Callies Compstar stroker crank for a 383. Both motors will have TFS 225s, FAST 90, and a custom grind cam from Pat G! So what I was wondering is how much of a difference would I see HP/TQ wise from going with a 383 vs a LS2? I called the shop where I got the pistons from and I can still swap them for some LS1 pstroker pistons! Let me know what you guys think the pros & cons are to each and which one you think I should go with!

I'm not too knowledgeable in this area so I can't say for sure what would be better. I just browse the forums now and then and your question got me wondering as well, quick google pulled up this:

Not much there, but from that read I'd say go with the ls2, more room to grow if you ever did want to stroke it.

I would go with the 383ci LS1. The extra displacement will help make more power and torque, not to mention it will swap right into your car without all the conversion harnesses.

if there isn't a deadline for when this needs to get done, why not save up for a 4 inch crank for the ls2?

LS2 without a doubt. 4" bore opens up a lot more options for better flowing heads.

All a 383 is good for is shrouding the valves when trying to use the heads you need.

Thats BS. A 3.905" bore is plenty to satisfy a relatively small 383ci engine, especially for a streetcar engine.

I have a Vengeance built 383 Stroker and love it! put down 505/486 got 25MPG on the way to Florida and back in it. Absolutely love it!

What are the specs on your motor if you don't mind? What internals, heads, and intake?

the LS2 Block is a better block....
364 to 383 is not that much difference, and in my opinion, does not outweigh what you can do with a 4" bore vs a 3.9" bore

there are a lot more heads options with a 4" bore, and in the end, you will make more power with a 4" bore

put a head made for a 4" bore on a 3.9" hole, and you will not get the full potential out of it...you will have valve shrouding issues, which leads to airflow not being ideal

to the point where you can have teh same 4" head, put in on both motors, and it will make more power on the 4" bore even with the slightly less cubes.

Whats the budget? I'm taking a stab in the dark here, but I would venture to say a 500whp LS2 would cost less $$ and be easier than a 500whp LS1.

You can always stroke the LS2 if you have the $$

FIRST ? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CAR
AUTOX.....DAILY DRIVER....WEEKEND DRAG CAR

1. Are you going F.I. or NA
2. What is the HP goal, Present and Future.
3. What is the BUDGET for the project.
4. What fuel will you be using.

All LS motors have great potental for high HP numbers, and everybody has there reason for building his or her particular motor. You should consider what your specific needs are and build the motor you need. I have noticed in this forum that there is a tremendous amount of knowledge in the forum members but I think you need to define the purpose of the car, answer the questions above, and then ask the question which is the best choice LS1 383 or LS2 364.

Just my 2 cents

do you already have the heads for this build ?which motor would be cheaper for you to build at this time ?it sounds like you got most of the parts you need for the ls2 build.

Actually, the nearly 20 cubic inches of difference is actually a big deal. With most street motors making 1.2-1.4HP/CI, cammed appropriately you're talking at least a 20hp difference in favor of the 383 simply because of the extra torque available.

As for a bigger bore being better, that's becoming a misnomer as well. Does the larger bore unshroud the valves better? Sure. Can you actually take advantage of that extra valve size with only 383ci and a hydraulic roller? Not anymore than you can with an even smaller engine, like a 364.

In fact, in the Engine Masters Challenge, they compete with pump gas, hydraulic roller engines (limited in RPM) and the dominating combinations have always been smaller bore and large stroke. Just take a look at how bad BES beat every other competitor with a 3.950" bore HEMI.

1. Are you going F.I. or NA...............Nitrous 200-250 shot through a standalone with racing gas.

2.What is the HP goal, Present and Future.
-I would like the make 500RWHP at minimum and have it run just as good on motor as it does on spray!

3. What is the BUDGET for the project.
-i don't have an extra budget but I'm just buying parts as I have the money. I don't want to spend a ton but I like as far as internals, bearings, bolts, and etc I'm not skimping out on. But as far as heads I don't have yet I would like to find some used TF 225 and not spend anymore than 1500 on them. I choose those becuz they have proven to make 500 with the right cam time and time again.

4. What fuel will you be using?
- 93 octane mixed with race gas! But 93 at minimum.

I vote for which ever will meet your goals and fit your budget. 500 horse out of either engine is not a problem.

I'd lean toward the Ls2 as it will leave you plenty of room to grow. There is not a whole lot you can do to an ls1 after it's stroked. The Ls2 will meet your goals now and if you want more It can be stroked later on.
