Hi. I want to try to change the spark plugs on my 2000 TA. I have read many threads about how to change them. Some people say it takes 5 hours. Some say 45 min. I would like to see a detailed video for dummies of how this is done. Not in any hurry. I can do simple things myself but nothing complicated.

Took me about 2 hours taking my time. Biggest pain is #8. Pull the pass cat and your good. If you have egr/air.... time to remove all that crap now.

I swap plugs in about 35-40 minutes. I use copper NKG TR55's and change them about every 15,000 miles. Pay $1.96 a piece for them. But I relocated my coils 7-8 years ago. Which makes it much easier to do a plug swap to say the least. Maybe this link will help you figure it out.

PS I do numbers 1-7 from the top and number 8 from the bottom. Don't forget your dielectric grease and never seize. Good luck with your work.

PS Important!! If you pull those sharp pointed fastners that hold the rubber seal to the cowl up and out of the way you will not scratch your arms up. Best thing to do is ditch all that emissions crap that is in the way. I threw mine in the garbage 6 months after I bought the car on my first plug swap. Its dead weight. I've my car for 13 years and have over 250,000 miles on it now. Thats about 15-16 plug swaps. Needless to say I've had it figured out for a long time now....LOL

and when you remove the nuts from the manifold to remove the Cat and they break the stud, you'll be real happy to then remove the manifold and take it somewhere to have the stud replaced, lol ask me how I know. BE SURE to soak them nuts real good before trying to get them off.

Changing Plugs on a F body LS1 just sucks, there is no way around it.

You can do all 8 from the top, remove the passenger coil pack rail and get a swivel socket.

^^^^What he said. Plus remove the AIR tube and the dip stick for more clearance.

Also, NGK recommends NOT putting anti-seize on their plugs. Whether you decide to do so it on you.

That video would be rated R....lots of cussing and throwing tools around......pissed off and 2 hours long.

LOL.......I got it down to about 45 minutes.....and absolutely zero struggling with anything. The key thing to do is to put the spark plugs in....and DO NOT TIGHTEN them down too much. All spark plugs need is to be put in HAND TIGHT....then with the ratchet a tiny little snug...thats all. I've been doing that for 14 years with my WS6 and never has a plug come loose or even begun to come loose.

Now when I do a plug change....they break free with almost no effort and no matter what the angle is they break loose easily. I can get my #8 plug out in about the same time somebody takes to get the front drivers side plug out. Takes me longer to lay across the engine, get my hand and socket to the #8 plug and get the small ratchet on the socket......then it does to get the plug out.....LOL

I do have LT's though...which makes things a little easier.

I always use anti-seize and I also glob a bunch of dielectric grease on the plug end and inside the spark plug boot end. I also glob some into the coil end of the wire.

I always wondered if 1" diameter holes can be cut into the inner wheel wells so a long extension, swivel socket could be used to change the plugs......?????

I just did mine this weekend in my 2000 Camaro SS. What takes people time is not necessarily actually removing the spark plugs and replacing them on the driver's side (about 30 minutes taking your time). What takes time is accessing and replacing the plugs on the passenger's side of the car. Depending on your experience, tools, size of your hands and arms, the job can take more or less time depending. For starters, there isn't much room or clearance on the passenger's side of the car where the plugs are located. Most end up having to remove the A.I.R. line and the coil pack rail mounted to the top of the passenger side valve cover. Also, removing the oil dipstick helps a little. Once these are out of the way (and it is not necessarily easy to access all five bolts on the coil rail) you can then actually see where the 6 and 8 plugs are located by following the plug wires. Gapping the plugs to spec and using dielectric grease in the ends of the plug wires is recommended.

Anyway, sorry I don't have a video for you but there is enough information on the install university link to walk you through the process. As you start working on it, things begin to make more sense and you kinda figure things out as you go.

And then once you get those 5 bolts in the coil rail removed, never put the rear 2 back on. This will help you on the next plug change.

I've gotten it down to about 30 minutes by taking off the passengers side coil Packs and cutting the crap out of my knuckles. You can get the #8 cylinder from the bottom on 00+ cars on stock manifolds easily because of the revised manifold design

I could make one that would **** lots of people off. 1st step, effortlessly reach in with socket and wrench and remove all spark plugs and replace. Helps when you have !AC, !Heater, !PS, !ABS, !AIR, !EGR, !TCS, +Headers. People say I'm crazy for deleting all that but then I say they are crazy for cutting themselves everytime they reach in their engine bay.

Just remove the engine from the bottom....you'll be happier doing a plug change that way........lol
