Default Does San Antonio Raceway close any time of the year? Other tracks near Austin?

I will likely be moving from CT to Austin in the coming year and have begun my research appropriately: drag strips and road courses.

The nearest strips I've spotted in my quick search seem to be San Antonio Raceway and Little River Dragway - though I didn't see info on bikes at LRD - so I was wondering if SAR closes at all throughout the year for the winter or any other reason. Average monthly temps lead me to believe it would be open year round, but coming from the Northeast, I'm used to a racing season that runs from April to maybe October, so year round racing would be awesome. Might get hot in the leathers in the middle of the summer, though.

Also, any info anyone has on road courses for motorcycle track days would be much appreciated, though I'll be posting on the bike forums for that info.

I'm pretty sure SAR is open year around.

Not to hijack, but does anyone know how accurate SAR's scale is?

Austin is nice... its between SAR, Ennis (NHRA) and Little River Academy. I havent been to LRA yet, but i heard that they only let bikes run 1/8 mi due to the speed they run and not enough shut down area. They do not enforce NHRA speed rules for safety equipment there either. LRA is about 1 hr from Austin. Ennis is the Pro track up south of Dallas... its a very nice facility of coarse. Its about 3 hrs from Austin. And SAR is also a nice track, ran on by the IHRA guys... and its abot 2 hrs from Austin. So there is a good selection of tracks around the CenTex area... not to mention quite a few road coarses for the bike. I also know they are getting ready to open a F1 track right outside of Austin also..... BTW Im in Killeen/Ft Hood area

Here in south austin SAR is only a 45min to 1hr drive, not bad at all. Harris Hill Road is the nearest road course. its located just north of sanmarcos.

Very cool. Multiple tracks close to home is great and being open year round is a huge bonus. Definitely not something I'm used to.

Thanks for the info, guys!

For info on motorcycle tracks check out motohouston.com . There are quite a few schools that operate in the area and there are several tracks. The closest to Austin that I'm familiar with is TWS in College Station, but I know there are several others and I'm really not familiar with where those are.

For Austin, SAR is the nicest drag strip in the area, but LRD (Temple-Academy) has its merits.

There is also a track in Mexico sometimes.

Interesting, I thought we had a monopoly on those Mexican tracks here in CT.

One thing I'm definitely looking forward to is checking out TX2K next year if the move happens by then.

I love going to SAR. Great Track prep and I love the setup. I actually asked my wife to Marry me there LOL. Im usually the 1st one down the strip on TnT nights.

Im waiting for it to cool off a little more and then im heading out there. I just need to get my new trans and converter in.

Hit me up when u get down here.

Thanks, man. Will do, though we're still in the first stages of research and planning. The goal is to make an exploratory trip early 2013 and be ready to go by mid next year when our current lease is up, though we can get out of it early if things work out better than expected financially.

SAR is very nice. LRD is not.

The F1 track will be the closest track to Austin. It will also kick TWS to the curb.

Agreed 100%. I gave up on LRD a long time ago. I'd rather drive the extra 30 mins to SAR and race on a proper track. The odd shut-down at LRD (short and with a curve) finally did it for me.

Haven't been to LRD in probably 5 years, so some of the other areas might be better (parking, prep, etc), but I doubt that shut-down has changed.

LRD is NOT a fancy nice track. But there are advantages to it. (I run a mid 10 sec car out there without a cage - can't get away with that at SAR unless it's a private rental)

I have been racing at TAD/LRD on and off since 1996 and know it well. Even though there is not a generous shutdown, we have low 9 sec cars out there stopping in time.

It cannot change... unless they re-route the Union Pacific Railroad line.

No offense John, but if you were having trouble stopping a mid 12 sec car out there you need to check your brakes.

It ain't a great shutdown area, it's not even a good one... but it works even for "fast" cars if they start hauling on the binders right after crossing the stripe.

I need to remind myself that I'm not at Ennis, (where I lift, coast a second, and then start gently applying the brakes and still have plenty of room). You can't fool around down there at LRD, but it works as long as you remember where you are.

No offense taken, but I'm not John, though (different guy with a silver G8 in Cedar Park )

I suppose it works well enough if you're used to it, but I never got used to "having to get used to it." Especially when there's an alternative close by. However, I'm not to the point where I need a cage, so you have a point about that.

Oops. Too many Johns in Cedar Park with silver G8's.

I don't know what his user name is here, (or even if he has one), so I thought you were him.

Yeah, Camaro6 is stuck running at LRD until a cage goes in. Looking at how booked up my fabricator is, it may be a long time before he can do it.
