Default What Would You Guys Do??

I have a '98 Z/28 that I bought brand new in '98 and it has been my dd for 14 years. I have taken great care of it, had the ORIGINAL clutch replaced about 1 1/2 years ago and had the trans rebuilt last year. I had it checked out this week to make sure there were no issues and other than a small leak in my steering unit, everything was good. Engine is good, never had any problems there, no leaky seals, ect. I am wanting to really get this car fixed up, new wheels, LS6 intake, headers, new exhaust, new interior, ect. My question is this; would you guys spend that kind of money on a 14 year old car with 203,000 miles on it?? I look at the ads and see 2001-2001 SS's with less than 50,000 miles going for $12,000-$16,000. Do you think it would make more since to try to get $4,000 or so for my car and go that route?? Just looking for some opinions from the experts.

I would keep it. I have a 98 z with 202k on it and i have ls6 intake and full exhaust and my car still runs strong. In my opinion, why spend alot of money on a similar car with less miles if your just going to do the same thing to it as you would with the one you have. I already know whats wrong with my car and i eventually plan to rebuild it though.

I think I'd agree with this... I mean you could just save the money and spend it towards fixing it up/mods, but that's really your call.. I think I'd go the slightly newer/less miles route.

That or just go ahead and freshen up the motor, maybe go bigger..

Really depends if the car has sentimental value to you. A positive side is you know the car and know how its been treated. Unfortunately when purchasing someone elses car already modded you have to hope it was taken care of properly, and the work that has been done was of good quality.

You know the car in and out, most fbody are bad shape unless your willing to pay a lot.

You just replaced a main part, the trans.. Just mod your car and when the motor pops rebuild it..

I wouldn't sell!

I would keep it but if it is your only car I would buy something else as an alternative DD for when you are working on this one. I have a 2000 SS with 186,000 and it is a DD if there is less than a 30% chance of rain, rain days are truck days. Truck is also good at hauling Camaro parts.

Hey Aaron, that was my reservation. I really don't know about throwing alot of $$ at my car with that many miles on it. On the other hand, I have always been reluctant to buy a used sports car, because like you said, you really don't know how it was taken care of.

Thanks guys for all of the responses, I just like to get ideas from guys that have been in the same situation.

I have never been in your situation since I have never bought a new car, but if I had bought a Z28 brand new back in 98 and I stll had it, I think I'd keep it until it dies.

I probably wouldn't necessarily even mod it. Just the opposite. I'd probably restore it as close to stock as possible and keep driving it.

Then again, I'm a bit different around here...

I partially agree with the above statement. If I hadn't been six years old in 1998, and had the opportunity now, I would buy a later 4th gen Fbody brand new off the lot. Sadly, I will never get that chance, but you have experienced it, so I say keep it. If it's been with you THAT long, why get rid of it? Go with what someone else said above, throw some bolt ons on it and let it ride. When the motor finally let's go, rebuild it

My bad I just turned 20 last month, so I'm pretty young. I always tell one of my bosses (37) that if things ever go south for any reason and we need money, I'll take him to the Smithsonian and we can sell him as a complete fossil and we'll make some extra cash that way

EDIT: I guess according to your profile if you're 35, that means in 1998 you were still older than I am now? Now I feel like a jackass for the fossil joke

Ask yourself of you would kick yourself in the rear for selling your original first year f body ls1. If no, do whatever sounds best and forget everyone's got 2 cents opinion. I get attached to some cars, not others.

Finacially, 4th gens are bad investments. You will never get back what you put into it. If thats what you're basing this on, then walk away from it and buy something newer than a 4th gen.

If you're stuck on modding a 4th gen then you might as well mod the one you have vs. buying a newer model. Lets be realistic, its not like it would be THAT much newer to where it would make much of a difference. Even the "newest" is already 10 years old. Now you could go the other route and buy something older. The prices only seem to increase on 1st and 2nd gens.

Having had a highly modded 00 SS, I opted out. It needed new bearings in the 408, interior, repaint, and the sail panel was bubbling. All in all, the car wasn't worth dumping another $8-10k into to me because in the end it would still only be a $10-15k car at the most.

I think a 200k mile car is a perfect one to throw mods at. Low mileage cars are the ones you want to keep original, and on a high mileage car you're just replacing a bunch of worn out ****. I say throw a 400 shot on it :
