Default lq9 or lq4 in 1970 chevelle

i want to put a 6.0l with 6 speed manual trans in my 1970 chevelle just for street and strip. run 10s hopefully. i want to run naturally aspiration to start with then go with a twin turbo set up. want to use a stock bottom end to start with. so i dont know if i should start with a lq4 due to the dish pistons for ez of handling a turbo or lq9 for the higher compression and more hp off the bat. i just want to start off with just doing just bolt ons like a cam, intake, throttlebody, and a good comp tune. on buget now to get started. $5,000 or so. any suggestions would be awsome. thanks

Are you planning to boost the stock engine when the time comes or pull it for some forged internals ? Also are you set on a turbo or is a supercharger an option ?

Two different applications would have two different strategies. LQ9 for N/A and LQ4 for turbo would be optimal. You can get away with either in either scenario, but that is what would be optimal.

10s N/A in a heavy Chevelle would need all the advantage you can get. So for that scenario, I would say LQ9 with 243/799 heads, big cam, tall gears in a killer tough rear end.

Turbo will be a different animal.

The 243/799 heads are typically found on LS6 and LS2 motors. You can go L92, but for what you are wanting to do, you will have to fly cut the pistons. Also, the L92 heads use different rockers and intake manifold which may add to your expense. However the L92s will make a lot more power.

i have a lq9 6.0 with l92 heads, a midsize cam, has an ls3 intake and it screams. should meet your $5000 goal if we are talking just engine.

You can put really good sized cam in an LS motor with cathedral port heads without fly cutting if the heads aren't milled. This is not the case with the square port heads. For a cathedral port motor you can go with Texas Speed's Magic Sticks or some say even their T-Rex cam without fly cutting. That with a 4500 or so converter should get your heavy Chevelle in the 10s N/A if you have it all tuned and set up properly. But, from the sounds of your other posts in this thread, I would say you have a lot of reading and research to do first. I did months of reading up on this forum before I started to formulate my build.
