I would go with a simple gloss black personally.

I used the chrome spray paint on my valve covers a little while ago. It did not have very good results. When I put them in the fuel lines and vacuum lines, if they touched them would rub the paint off. And if you took a towel to them to clean them off the paint would come off with it. They looked alright , it was a little more metallic silver. I later took them off and sprayed them again with a aluminum silver ceramic high heat paint. This had much better results. When I had my motor apart for the cam, I also painted the intake, alt, alt bracket, and the throttle body. In my opinion it turned out decent and definitely cleaned up the bay.

I did mine with that vht wrinkle plus, was very happy with how they turned out, that chrome spray paint is garbage imo,the pc chrome stuff. Looks pretty good but i would stick with something that you know will look good,or ya can always buy some aftermarket polished ones,i would paint them black and maybe do a red pin stripe in the vent part,

Ive used the chrome spray paint on a model car. It ended up having a satin finish, much like a silver spray paint. Not chrome at all.

On my valve covers I used Cast-Blast primer with their cast aluminum color paint. Looks stock, and has held up pretty well.

Sandblasting will be faster and easier in my opinion.

What if I don't have a heat gun?

I'm gonna get the paint tomorrow and do them in red.

^^Test the red paint on something else first. Lots of out of the can "red" end up maroon or orange. I think for me Ford Red and an Engine Enamel Red were the best reds from the local auto parts stores.

I painted both of my cars valve covers with gloss black engine enamel and cleared them. Just hit them with 400 grit a little and some brake cleaner. They both turned out great. One car is pewter and I painted the coils red, brackets pewter, and covers black.

I painted them yesterday. They look really good.

I was gonna ask if I should clear coat them.....I guess I'll clear them like you did. Can't hurt. I guess the raw paint would get dirty and grimy looking much quicker. I'm assuming the clear coat will handle me spraying degreaser on them every few months to clean my engine bay......

I use a degreaser called blue wolf on mine pretty often and haven't had any problems. They still shine and come perfectly clean.
