Default 4L60E torque converter question

I am putting together a 64 Nova with a 2000 5.3 and a rebuilt 4L60E. I am looking for suggestions on a higher stall converter with out having to pay for a real stall speed. I have herd of the Trailblazer I6 swap but I think those are a 4L65E transmission and the splines will not go all the way in. I guess it will go in far enough to work? The torque converter company I talked to told me the flywheel will not bolt up. and were sugesting a converter they sell that is 200-400 more stall than stock. Any experience or suggestions? I am getting different information everyone I ask. Thanks

Is the 4L60 out of the 2000 5.3? Meaning is it an LS style transmission?

If so, then the 278mm is a great choice for you, which comes from the I6 TB. We have our version of the 278mm, a little higher stall and several HD upgrades internally.

What are you planning on doing with the car? Any performance mods to the engine?

A little over 20 years ago I worked at a transmission shop. I have good friends still their. They are use to building stock units and do not know about interchanging OE converters to achieve better results like the I6 Trailblazer converter swap I have been reading about. Yes it is an LS style 4L60E. I can buy most lock up stock converters for 100.00. This is what I am looking to do. My transmission friend told me Trailblazers were 4L65 and the converter would not work. Did they make a I6 Trailblazer with a 4L60e with a converter I should use? Does anyone have a part # for one? Will the 4L65 converter work in a 4l60? When I called the converter company I was told the bolt circle on the TB converter was smaller 10.5 insted of 11 inches and they suggested an origional style converter with a 200 to 400 higher stall that would fit my flywheel. He also said the TB converter was only slightly smaller and did not think it would stall much higher. I then called another transmission guy and he told me he used Corvette converters and the 4L65 TB converter should work but the splines would not go all the way in the converter. I have been out of the loop for a long time and would appreciate any advise.

If you have an LS style 4L60, it takes the same converter wether it is a 60, 65 or 70. The unit should measure roughly 6.5" in OAH. They will all use the same bolt pattern, which we call the LS BP. You want a 278mm TB I6 stall, sticker code VJCX. It should be about a 2500 flash stall at OE specs. If you can get one for $100, good price. They do have a problem with the rear bearing failing, but otherwise they are a decent OE converter.

Chris you are the man!
Thanks
So I noticed 2 bolt patterns in the flywheel for the converter on my truck 5.3 Is this why this converter will bolt up? Ls style trans is one with the 12:00 bolt hole and the bolt on full circle bell housing correct?

Some LS flexplate were dual bolt pattern. So it had the LS and the LT. You will need the LS, which is 11.080. The LT is 10.750.

Wait. The c5 Corvette stall is different than an fbody. Is the vette stall vette specific? Would a trailblazer converter work in a fbody?

We have done exactly what you are wanting to do a handful of times and that converter holds up pretty well considering its a stock part and really shouldnt. Transtar part # is "gm55" cvc# is "bu51" what used to be the universal part number before everyone lost their minds and did their own thing is "b87" and is supposed to stall at 1800-2000 but thats totally dependant upon your power.

The C5 Corvette uses the standard LT 4L60 converter. That used it till 05 when they went to a C6 and then used the LS style 4L60 with a C6 specific bolt pattern. In 06 they went to the 6L80, but still has the same unique bolt pattern.

The TB converter will work in an 98-02 F-body, basically when they went to the LS block they also changed to the LS transmission.

So the c5 vettes used the "old school" b29 style if you will or 298mm converters up to 2005? that seems strange and if thats the case I learned something new today...

Last question. The 4L60E with the bolt on style bell housing is the Ls style correct?

There are a few late model 4L60 LT style transmissions with a removable bell, but they are very rare. The best way to tell is by the input shaft.... I found this cool pic that should help. You should have the LS 300mm style 30 spline shaft, the LT will be the 298mm 30 spline.

Chris I ordered a CVC BM51 it had the same sticker code you said to look for and it did not fit the imput shaft and I think it would need the dished flywheel. I was going to tell you you did not know what you were talking about but you posted the pictures and you are correct again. My trans is the second picture with the 30 splines and I called a local converter rebuilder and he sugested a Astro van converter that would give me 2200 stall that would fit my trans. Do you have any sugestions besides taking the trans apart switching drums and input shafts. Thanks Mark

OK, so sounds like you have a really late LT 4L60. You will need something with a "DC" code, like DCNF. That will be a 2200-2400 range. Make sure it fits your dished flexplate, it should if you have a dual bolt pattern. If not you can drill it. You will also need a pilot extension. Because the 298mm LT style converter pilot is not long enough to reach the LS crank. We have the extension, they are $40. You can also use a spacer of a 4L80 flexplate setup, but you will put it on the trans side. So the flexplate remains in the same spot, you are just extending the crank. Hope this makes sense.

If it was mine I would use your trans as is and get the converter that fits the trans. Swapping to the other stlye is more than just swapping out the input drum/shaft. The stator support is different and so is the bell housing. Both are fairly easy to remedy but using the correct converter might just be easier. You will have to match the flexplate to the converter as well but it looks like you are aware of that already.

But an 11" from a 02+ trailblazer I6 will fit an fbody without any problems? Right?

Correct, because that will be an LS 4L60 transmission.
