1968 Chevelle Going Turbo LS. HELP
I am inheriting a 2002 LS1 Engine HMMM
I have been contemplating going the LS route.
And here comes my cousin up grading up to a built LSX 427 long block with a bunch of supporting goodies .
So i am the lucky guy that gets the OE engine from his car, a LS1 with less than 50k miles.
My initial thoughts were to get a rebuildable core, build it up (cam, rods, pistons and mild head work) and go from there.
But now getting a known great running engine with low miles.
Should anything be done to this one before the transplant?
OR
should I wait till i blow it up?
Anyways the plan/target is still the same a low 11 with very high 10 second occasional pass NOT looking at setting records or getting every inch of power out of it. I want this to be a reliable build that i can get in and go on a nice long road trip.
Also i am shooting for some bling factor so Twin small turbos is an option i am really considering but only if AC, PS and PB can be kept.
If not id really like to copy the GN header design with the crossover and all.
Also from which donor vehicles are the accessories preferred for transplants ?
The motor is currently set up for a manual transmission, So what else is needed to go to an Automatic besides a flex plate?

By all means go the LS!!!!! Check the stickies here for bracket compatibility. With a bit of NOS you can hit the numbers you are targeting. Turbos seem to play well with LS engines. I went supercharged, so I do believe in the boost method. Feel free to ask questions, and do not be afraid of the swap.

I recommend doing a bunch more reading here and search Chevelle to get an idea of what works and what doesnt. Search user name Typhoon1015, he has a good detailed build thread.
Forget the GN stuff. Use a set of LS adapter plates with SBC mounts and bolt it in. Yes you can keep all accessories but be prepared to do some fabricating. Id recommend Fbody accessories with a ac compressor mounted low on the passenger side.

I didn't get the LS1 and that sorta killed the project.
moving forward
I picked up
1999 LQ4 all accessories, manifolds ECM and wire harness -- damn near complete engine minus a few injectors.
A set of ready to bolt on 317 aluminum heads
Jasper's rebuilt 4L80e with converter
Frame mounts
Energy Suspension mounts
Innovative adapter plates.
GN OE fuel tank with modified filler neck
Dual in-tank Walbro 340 pumps.
TPFE -10 feed and return lines
Before the engine gets put into the car i will open up the ring gap for turbo application -- Not getting a turbo right away but eventually it will.
I am considering a TFS-30602003 with appropriate springs, lifters and pushrods.
This is my short term shopping list

I did a 69 chevelle a couple of years ago single borg s475. This was before the holley motor mounts and oil pan came out. I ended up using umi motor mounts and made my own crossmember. If I had it to do over again I would use the holley stuff. I put a vintage air system on it with a cx racing air to air intercooler. Hydroboost on the brakes with power steering.

Tons of engine bay room! My a/c compressor sits under the intercooler. Truck manifolds, C5 Corvette accessories, also has a GZ Motorsports vacuum pump next to the alternator to keep ring seal good and add some ponies/prevent oil leaks/seal blow out.
Just remember Gen3 connecting rods will bend over time above about 600rwhp.
You can go on Brian Tooley Racing and just buy their LS9 head gaskets, front/rear crank seals and pretty much reuse the old front/rear cover gaskets or buy new there as well.
