Default Best block for forced induction ?

Looking to start a turbo build not sure which block to go with lsx ,erl. Or maybe the 6.0 block not sure of the up rating on it compared to other two blocks. Would rather have over kill as to running on the edge. Planning on a 408-427 ci motor with a 88-91mm turbo. Any info or opinions would be greatly appreciated

Find out what your budget is, and get with an Engine Builder. Most of them have a preferred block. LSX and ERL are both GREAT blocks. Dart now offers an Iron Block I believe.

Stock block will hold that with some good gaskets and good studs

a lot of guys running stock 6.0 blocks. they can handle 1000-1100 hp just fine. i was in the same boat looking for the best block to start with and i think i will end up with a 6.0. the lsx is nice but expensive . 8k for a good lsx short block with all the trimmings but it can handle 2000hp. i dont need that

LQ4 and don't look back. That block will take more horsepower than you could ever think about using on the street.

ERL 6 bolt. That way you can run more than 20-22# safely.

I really don't think you'll be able to max out a 91 on a stock block. Around 1000 I'd be looking at something aftermarket.

For my project on my Trans Am I will be doing a 427ci stroker (6.0) with a 88mm Precision Turbo with a forged crankshaft, pistons and all other good stuff. I should be anywhere between 900-930HP at the flywheel. At the HP range you are looking for a LQ4will do the job but consider investing in great parts. Forged rotating assembly and bottom end, such as a Callies Dragonslayer forged cranshaft, forged low compression pistons with the right compression ratio for your HP goals Just get your self with a great engine builder and he should give you an idea of what to start looking towards investing on. I would recommend an late model standard deck LSX block, but that also of course has to do with your budget.

You mean 408 correct? I don't think you can get a 427 out of a LQ4/9, even if you could the cylinder walls would be minimal.

the meat is there but not enough to be safe on boost. it can be done N/A

For those goals and wanting overkill. ERL no question. Save the weight and get the strength.

I would add to that your goals, power, longivity etc.
I dont care for the stock blocks with a stroke longer than stock because of the short skirts in the blocks. I have had very good luck with the ERL engines. I use a long block that they put together and it has ran well.

You will have more blowby than a 300k mile engine. A 427 in an iron 6.0 just doesn't allow a good piston to be put in there. Plus you have to go with a 4.100 or 4.125 crank and that's not really good for boost. You would be better off using a 390 cu in motor from AES. It would be a good boost combo and work well with your 88mm turbo. A 427 would max out an 88 pretty easy.


OP the limiting factor of the iron block is that when you start getting close to the 1000 hp mark you will tend to lift the heads. Any four bolt block will do that. ERL 6 bolt superdeck or LSX block, nothing else. Otherwise you will be spending more money down the road.
