Question replacing fuel pump

So first question, I've found write up on another site and they suggest cutting a hole in the trunk area, and knowing what has to be done to drop the tank I agree lol, but do you guys suggest this or take to stealership?

Next question, like my annoying 98 ecu that only has one hand held tuner option, do I have to find a 98 specific pump or will the racetronix F-ls1 pump work?

And third and final question, the longer I drive the car (45 minute drive without stopping) the car feels like its dying. When I get off the freeway and stop the car bogs out like I'm in 1st gear without holding in the clutch, it almost dies then kicks back in. But when I accelerate its really sluggish and starts choking Idk what eke the prob would be. I've replace the iac valve, tps, maf sensor and the fuel filter... The pump is all I can think of left unless you guys have any suggestion?

might be your regulator (it is assembled with the assembly of the fuel pump) happened to me made the car run lean and fires like hell, but in term's of the replacement don't cut off the tank although bringing it down seem's hard and more trouble but hell yes it's worth for a clean install.
you might wan't to do a fuel pressure test and see how lean the car run's etc.. just to make sure that it is your fuel pump.. keep in mind if you are thinking of going stock you'll need to get the whole assembly not the pump only.

racetronix does have a kit for 98 f-bodies.

last place I would take it to is a dealership.....I'd rather let my 7 year old daughter work on it. Go to a reputable performace/tuner shop if you don't want to fix it yourself. The racetronix pump with the hotwire kit is very good and it's what most people here switch to.

Ok it looks similar but fair enough, now is there a write up on how to do this? CUZ THAT extra wiring seems confusing, granted I haven't looked at the setup yet but it seems like it's a lot more work than just popping in a new pump lol

And another question, is there a way to test the fuel pressure sensor unit that's mounted on top of the fuel pump on the outside of the tank? Could that possibly be my problem?

I just pulled two new codes P0171 and P0174 (system too lean bank 1 and 2)

testing was what i couldnt do because i dont have any tools
although you do that via the fuel rail yet again since you are pulling those codes i wouldnt need to do the test as its already obvious.

both are the similar but i gave you the link from ws6project cause its free shipping.

i believe once you purchase it you could request a installation guide they'll send it to you or just search it i suppose.

once you're done with installation your next step would be tuning.

I have an unused race tronix fuel pump for the 98 model. PM if you're interested in saving a few dollars on that purchase.

Why would I need to get it tuned?

through out time i noticed that you need to do that a lot as every single bit matter's, now that you are using a better pump that supports 600 whp i'd assume the car will start running rich instead of lean or opposite .. either way the tune shall never harm you.

through my experience also when i changed my stock assembly and pump to a same stock assembly and pump the car stopped miss firing true but was still boggy and chokes sometimes .. until tuned.

Test fuel pressure at WOT before and after the swap. If it changed more than 1psi you need a touch up tune. It will more than likely change and run rich.

Walboro and cut the hole, makes it easier if you need to replace the pump ever again, not that you should, but you never know. And as long as you seal it up properly you shouldn't have any issues later.

I just got changing my fuel pump and let me tell you cutting the hole saved me time. The first pump didn't work so I had to remove and return. With out the hole I would've been drop everything back out. I agreen keeping it factory looking, but I don't have cash..I have kids. They cost more that the dealership. I don't have many friends that can give me there weekends. So i borrowed a cut tool (dremel) and one hour later. I had a hole.

Does 98 have the flex fuel neck or only 99+?

I finally cut a hole in my. 94 for third pump- the steel neck makes it much more difficult than my 02 was.
