Default Cam ?????'s

I did a search but I still cannot find my answer. I would like to get a cam that will not require constant adjustments on my car. I want the most aggressive but also one that will allow me to keep this as a daily driver. What are some suggestions? I am still learning the whole internal aspect, I am not a mechanical guru so any help would much be appreciated.

Thanks,
Erick

Well you need to look for a sleeper cam. MY GT2-3 cam can on a stock tune forever. Ran perfect and you could not tell i had a cam.

i like how much power my tsp 231/237 put down, sounds great & with proper tuning is fine for most daily driven cars just make sure you have a quiet exhaust system otherwise the sound police in your area might take offense

It all depends on your idea of streetable,

A truely streetable cam would be a lunati t1 or a thunder 220 or one of the old man cams.

Under my definition of streetable the trex might even make it.

like mike said depends on what you concider streetable?
im currently looking for a similar can and mine needs to pass CA somg...
streetable for me means...
-good idle 700-800 rpm (no bucking or stalling)
-little to no lope (keep things stealthy)
-similar to stock powerband (1500-6400)
-easy on springs (less than .570 lift)

and what comp recamended was a 222/224 .566/.568 114 w/ 26918 springs
ill let you know how i like it in a few months...

I definately want people to look and say damn what the hell is in his car, I dont want to be steathy, My EX is borla w no cats and an open plate, cops in san diego hate it, but it sounds better than the fart cans do so they are pretty cool about unless i get crazy on the gas. My Idea of streetable is that i can still drive my car with the same feeling that its going to be reliable. I have read a lot of cams require valve adj's every 5 to 10K miles, right now I dont have the knowledge or the tools to do this. So i want to get a mean but a some what im not gonna beat the **** out of the valves , cam.

Thanks for all the inputs, I am so glad I found this site, you all have saved me some time and money.

In other words, you want a "magic cam". Well, bad news. It doesn't exist. You can't have everything.

Either you do things in moderation, or you pay the price in moderation.

If you want it to sound like that and be easy on the valvetrain, get a Comp Xtreme RPM 220 cam on a 108.

Sorry, I was joking. It is basically impossible to do both.

You have to make choices. This is just another of them.

Personally, I don't understand the "my car has to lope like an epileptic in a disco" fad, but it is up to you.

I have only been in a coulpe of cammed ls1 and they loped like a horse on crack, and damn they would run, I guess better way of asking, what cam will provide the best performance with minimal adj? if its the stealth cam then i will go for it. I dont get to much time to read up on specs because i am in the military and i am always gone.

I was thinking about the 216/220 .525/.532 114 comp cam or the MTI's SSII. Maybe its the right cam for you too. I am doing some research myself, and maybe someone will shed some more light on these for us.

Here is what I pposted under another one of these threads.

Well, this is the point at which you must make a decision.

Do you want high average power?

or

Do you want high peak power?

High peak power has the potential to be a little faster, but you have to be a much better driver. I'm going to make the assumption that you have a M6. To take advantage of that peak power, you are going to need a set of 4.10 or so gears, a good clutch, sticky tires, and a LOT of seat time. It has the potential to be faster than the "average power" car, but you need the correct setup and have to be a very good driver. High peak power cams also have drivability issues and require frequent valvetrain maintenance.

High average power lets you get by without the perfect setup or being the best driver. The power is always there, so mistakes aren't as costly. IMO, a high average power cam is much more fun in a street car. You don't have to "give it hell" to have a good amount of fun, but it will still run with most cars. You don't have to do 6K rpm clutch drops at the line, either. High average power camshafts have generally good drivability.

So, it is choice time.

Please give an example of a peak power cam and an average power cam. I would like to know for my own personal knowledge.

The best examples IMO of the high average power camshafts are the TR224 and its derivatives. There are several other camshafts that fit this bill, it just depends on the design. Generally, they don't go any higher than 226-228 degrees of duration at .050".

Examples of the high peak power camshafts are the 230+ duration camshafts. The new TREX, the larger G5 cams, etc. Personally, for most applications I find the largest of the newest batch of cams to be a very silly choice. Very few people have their cars designed to take advantage of power in a very narrow range.

I think most people around here are missing the point that their cars are street cars, not race cars. Race cars tend to use high peak power designs that produce high amounts of HP within a limited range. In general, they are not fun to drive on the street, require steep gearing, and very good drivers.

People have been building fun, fast street cars for years. The method remains the same. Produce a lot of torque, keep the RPM below 6500, and make the curve as flat as possible across the board. With a lot of average power, it does not take an excellent driver to run good, consistent times. If you shift a little early, no big deal...the power is still there. Your parts last longer and it is a hell of a lot of fun to drive. I'm sure everyone has seen a car that runs everything from low 11s to mid-12s. No consistency, but the driver occasionally pulls off a really fast run. If everything is perfect, it runs like a rocket. If it isn't, it runs like a bolt-on car.

Most people around here have 3500#+ cars that spend 90% of their time on the street. We need to really consider that when we talk about camshaft selection.

Unfortunately, high peak numbers on the dyno sell camshafts.

there is a good comparo in POPULAR HOTRODDING testing 3 diff COMP CAMS on a new LS1 on an engine dyno... though it had headers, elec. water pump, accufab TB...

basline was 407hp 409tq ( note all runs ended @ 6200 rpm...which means the last 2 cams were still making power @ redline! i guess the 222 cam would have hit 455hp @ 6500 and the 228 would have hit 470 @ 6800 rpm.)

first cam was a SMALL 212/218 .522/.529 114 lsa
numbers went to 439hp 426tq ... made good torque and good hp...very solid gains.
and a near stock curve...nice looking graph.

second was a MEDIUM 222/224 .566/.568 112 lsa
numbers went to 450hp 422tq...made over 10 more peak hp and only lost 4 tq to the last cam... power band was about 500 rpm higher... very nice graph! this the cam i will probly get! good numbers and it will probly pass CA smog!

third was a BIG 228/230 .571/.573 112 lsa
numbers were 455hp 421tq...if revved to 7000 it would have made 465 or so...not much tq gain over stock and less than the small cam! but this would be a good racing only cam with ported heads!

so out of the 3 i say the MEDIUM cam won! had just as much TQ as the small cam and more than the big cam...it also made awsome peak power and did give a good 1500-6500 power band....it will be an awsome daily driver with ported heads!

yo WS6...where are you at? im in vista? iver go to pizza port on moday nights in carlsbad?
