Default Today it begins! 1990 Mustang Vert LS Swap

I just wanted to start this thread to let you guys know that I got a 5.3L with a 700r4 this weekend and will be starting the swap once I get the rest of the parts in order.

The biggest thing I have been racking my brain about is which K-Member to get. Can you guys help me with that? what have you used what to stay away from that sort of stuff.

Here is a list of what I have so far.

-1990 Mustang GT Vert
-GM 5.3L
-GM 4L60e trans
-ECU
-Wire harness

Ill be looking for advice as to what other parts im going to need. Thank you guys in advance for all the help. I will be updating this thread through put the build.

PICS-

You don't have to buy a new K-member. BRP sells a kit that fits with the stock K-member and a Cadillac CTS-V oil pan. I'm not sure what headers will fit, but they sell headers for the swap too. I think the 5th gen Camaro exhaust manifolds will fit also.

If you really want an aftermarket one, just google it. There's several companies that offer them. AJE, Maximum Motorsports, Team Z... Just to name a few.

Do you have a 700-R4 or a 4L60E? Not much difference between the 2, just one is electronically controlled (4L60E) and the other isn't. The 4L60E will hook right up and can be controlled by the ECU, however to use a 700-R4 there is more involved I believe.

You'll also need to think about the front accessory drive. I believe the F-body setup will fit with little to no modification. Truck setup may invole hood modification or a new hood. Not sure on the 'Vette setup...

What are your plans for the fuel system? Staying EFI or going carb?

You might wanna try stating what you'll be using the car for. It would definitely help people make suggestions when it comes time for you to ask questions.

P.S.
I've never done this swap... I'm just speaking based on my own research since I'm planning on doing this swap myself.

Knowing what the engine came out of (year/make/model) and if you have any plans to upgrade to a 4L60E at a later date would be useful for wiring as well.

Ill have to check on the part number of the trans, I got the full setup out of a 2006 2500HD van.

I plan on keeping the car fuel injected since it will be my daily driver/weekend worrier.

If it was a 2500hd it should have had the 6.0l engine and the 4l65e transmission if they all came together and that is what they came out of. Your setup should also be drive by cable if it came from a van!

Let me know if you need any more help!

Is there anyway to tell by looking at the motor if it is a 6.0 or the 5.3?

It will be cast on the rear of the engine almost to the top where the cylinder head mounts to the block.

You can find it on the front or rear of the block right below the cylinder head, on the front it will be right below passenger cylinder head.

What would you guys suggest that I do to this motor to freshen it up a bit? It has around 80K on it, and would like to replaces all the stuff I can while the motor is out of the car. We will down the roar be running the car on the bottle or boost, so i want to get it ready to handle that. Since its been around 10 years since my last motor build what do you guys think we should do?

Looks like a 4L60E in the pics, not a 700R4.If the engine looks clean inside,a bit of head work, cam and oil pump would be a great idea right now.

Not to jack ur thread, I'm doing a similar swap as well. I've also heard 5th gen manifolds will work, has anybody tried 5th gen long tubes? Op, definitely do top end work now, lifters trays, cam, springs etc. also, psi or another sponsor seems to b the way to go for a harness unless u have the skills to fab one yourself

Edit: further search shows it unlikely to fit

80K isn't a whole lot for these motors.. I would recomend a smaller 220/224 duration cam, valve springs and good tune. In a 5.3 that should be an honest 325whp motor if your tuner knows what he is doing.

Updated the pictures on the first post. Last weekend we got most of all the parts installed, we are just waiting on a drive shaft and then do the wiring.

How was the fitment of the UPR kit? Any complaints about it? I think I am going with that same kit. The first swap I did I used the AJE unit. No complaints at all with AJE, I'm just looking for a beefier unit this time around. Thanks,Mark.

I really like the fit and finish of the UPR products. The only problem we are running into with it are the headers hitting the motor mounts and the flaming river steering rack is hitting the headers. Other than that it went together with no issues.
