Heads or Cam?
Hey guys!
I know someones prob already got it somewhere on the site. However i suck at using the search function.
As ya'll know taxes are coming back. I'm looking to do something to my car seeing as how I personally have never bought anything for it. I have LT headers, Aftermarket Y-pipe, and a slp intake. My car is a 2002 z28 so if im not mistaking it comes with the ls6 intake?
My future plans overall would be to go supercharged. but that will def. take a few years. so for now to get my power i was wanting to do either heads or cam. I was looking at the ms3 cam because i would really like to get that power and sound it has. Plus the fact im only working with around 800. But my question to the LS1 tech family is which would be the smarter move? to get the ms3 cam or the ls6 heads first?

Cam would be better. It is best to do heads and cam at the same time, so you can get a cam and heads set that match each other well. You don't hear of very many people swapping for better heads without already having a cam or swapping cams at the same time as heads.

Cam it and Tune it. You will be happy. If its an A4 a stall can provide a considerable differance also, throw a YANK in it and it will be a different car

If you choose the MS3 you will surely need to check what the valve springs that are on the heads now are rated at. As for the chain and pump its not required to be replaced but it is a good time to do it being all that is apart already. I personally had the factory oil pump go bad within a month of a cam swap and had to tear the front all back down again. I went with a SLP pump and a LS2 chain

i had planned on just replacing the springs. but im scared my budget wont allow to replace the springs, chain, and pump.
Its stuff like that that scares me. Because this is my DD and i'd rather not mess up my whole car just because i went cheap on it. It just makes me want to spend the money on upgrades for my bike lol. But i'd love to get a cam in my car!

My cam package cam from tick performance which is the beat deal comparably to all other sponsors. 884$ everything that you NEED for the swap.. cam..springs...pushrods..ls6 oil pump..timing chain. Do NOT skimp out on any of these. Install and a 500$ (Must have) dyno tune. Read the cam sticky. A typical install, parts, labor, tune, is going to be anywhere from 2-3000+$..No way around it. Do not settle for just a ms3. You really should call Martin@tick performance or TSP guys and have them explain and spec out a cam for your needs. You'd be stupid not to.

If this is your DD then I would wait till you don't need it for one and then start the modding. Nothing takes the fun out of modding when you have to rely on the car to get you to work. Now I know I'm going to get ripped for this but the car will never be the same once you have gotten into the motor.

That's the thing the guy already had a cam in the car before he sold it to me. When he sold it to me he had already put the stock cam back in.
I've read that even with just a cam swap the ls1 can be reliable.
Btw. How much is a mail order tune from the user frost?

What gears are you running?? An M6 with that cam will need more gear than stock!! Justin Hover has the best idea, drop it off at Tick and get a cam for your needs!! Can't go wrong there!!

A frost tune is 150$, I have 2 "tunes" from him...I already know what your thinking....If you get alittle 224/224 cam you could possibly get away with mail tune. Really no one will, including me, recommend this. Anything over (even a 224 imo) MUST have a dyno tune. But you know this cause you read the sticky right?

With barely the budget to pay for either wait. Friend has a Focus SVT that he drives to work. He always wanted a super charger for it, so he bought a used Ford racing kit. suppose to be bolt on, no issues, drive like stock, yada yada. Well 5 weeks, 4 returns to the shop, cant find the correct tune, last time driving home from the shop oil line lets go.
Of course this doesn't happen all the time but it happens more then you think. Stock cars run well because the car companies have invested millions to make them do so.
Oh as a ps mine has been down for 2 months trying to search for a vibration in 6th gear.
