I'm not an expert on the specific benefits of the 4l80e over the 4l60e, but I know the 4l80e is a hell of a lot stronger. but the gearing in the 80 isn't as aggressive and its heavier than a 4l60e.

Everything is smaller on the 60e, when your making big power you need the stronger transmission... IMO

Also the extra weight of the 80e makes up for itself because you can run more power and launch hard off of the transbrake if you have one..

the 4l60e has its time and place depending on your goals...

550+ hp and alot of transmission builders recomend a th400 or 4l80e...

There are some built 4l60's handling big power too though, the only downside to the 4l80e is swapping it into a fbody and rewiring and retune , banging out the trans tunnell etc...

What is your HP/setup? Will you do a lot of racing?

I agree with BURKEN01.

It really depends on the power level and the power level goal.

I see no reason to swap over to a 4L80E below the 500 RWHP level unless you are going to up the power later.

I'm not one to push the 4L60E unit but it has it's place and being the OEM unit in many GM vehicles, there are times when it's the best unit to use, even when you may be pushing it's limits.

Once you eclipse the 500-550 RWHP level, the 4L80E should be a consideration.

I think you should check out RPM's level 7 4L60E package. This is what I have. I've had levels 5-7 and have not had any issues from any of them. Cross fingers for this season! LOL
